JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: The Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications at Penn State seeks an outstanding faculty member for an open rank tenure-track position in the Department of Journalism. The successful candidate will have the ability to contribute to the broad intellectual and creative life of the department in the area of sports journalism. Top candidates should have a broad range in skills in both research and industry, and a strong and demonstrable understanding of the role that sports play in American and global culture. Key responsibilities include teaching two courses per semester, mixing skill courses with those focused on ethics, diversity and culture, while actively pursuing a substantive agenda for scholarly/creative work. A Ph.D. in journalism, communication or other terminal degree in a related field is required.The successful candidate must complete all degree requirements by the appointment start date. Review of applications will begin Jan. 6, 2025. Candidates with a strong professional portfolio and college-level teaching experience, along with a research agenda fitting for a tenure-track position at an R1 institution, will be given strong consideration. Those with a demonstrated understanding of or experience in investigative and enterprise journalism and/or documentary filmmaking will rise to the top of the field for consideration. Assistant Professor -The assistant professor should possess a terminal degree; must have demonstrated ability as an instructor or researcher; and must have shown definite evidence of growth in scholarly, artistic, or professional achievement. Associate Professor - The associate professor should possess the same qualifications as the assistant professor but must also provide evidence of an established reputation in scholarly, artistic, or professional achievement. Professor -The professor should possess the same qualifications as the associate professor but must also provide evidence of a substantial record of advanced research and/or creative work, and of leadership in their field of specialization. This rank should be reserved for persons of proven stature in teaching and/or research. The Journalism major is one of five majors in the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications and currently serves approximately 400 students who are learning, collaborating and creating in our state-of-the-art Bellisario Media Center. The successful candidate will be eligible for appointment to the College's graduate-program faculty.
