This opportunity is in the Finance Department.

Our Accounting & Finance department is dynamic and collaborative. In the role of Tax Manager (internally known as Tax Manager, Exempt, Management Job Family Level 1), you will be a key member of the Finance and Accounting team. You will work closely with the Tax Director, CAO, CFO, and other internal stakeholders. Your contributions in ensuring tax compliance, managing staff, and enhancing processes will have a significant impact throughout Safety National.

Your Responsibilities

As a Tax Manager, your day-to-day responsibilities will include:



  • Managing and reviewing the work of the Tax Accountant and Tax Accounting Specialist.
  • Overseeing federal, state, and municipal tax filings.
  • Coordinating premium and income tax compliance calendars and intercompany settlements.
  • Reviewing and approving Federal excise tax payments, premium tax estimates, and investment tax reports.
  • Ensuring accuracy in monthly, quarterly, and annual tax provisions, journal entries, and account reconciliations.
  • Preparing responses to external audit requests and supporting the Accounts Payable team.
  • Driving process automation and managing special tax-related projects with external advisors.


  • Monthly responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

    • Reviews investment tax reports for use in Federal tax provision
    • Reviews the Federal income tax provision and journal entries for all legal entities
    • Reviews the Actual vs. Plan tax explanations, as necessary
    • Reviews all tax account reconciliations




  • Quarterly responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

    • Prepares or reviews the STAT deferred tax entries for SN, SFIC, and SSIC
    • Prepares or reviews the JGAAP tax entries
    • Reviews municipal tax accruals, guaranty fund assets, and premium tax accruals
    • Reviews all Federal and state income tax estimates
    • Assists in the preparation and input of tax items into financial reporting workflows
    • Prepares responses to external audit requests
    • Reviews Federal excise tax returns




  • Annual responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

    • Reviews Federal, Canadian, and state income tax returns
    • Reviews various municipal filings, and miscellaneous personal property tax declarations
    • Reviews all state premium tax returns and true-up calculations for SN and SFIC
    • Reconciles deferred tax inventories for multiple accounting bases
    • Assists in the budget process with regards to tax items




The Ideal Candidate

We are seeking a dependable, organized, and motivated individual with the following qualities:



  • Strong leadership and training capabilities to manage a team effectively.
  • Excellent time management and multitasking abilities.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Technical proficiency in tax and financial software, including the Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel.


Qualifications

Required:



  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant tax experience (preferably in a Big 4 or large local CPA firm).
  • Proficiency with tax compliance and provision software.


Preferred:



  • CPA designation.
  • Insurance industry experience.
  • Familiarity with investment tax accounting and management software.
  • Prior management or supervisory experience.

Compensation for the successful candidate will consider the candidate's particular combination of knowledge, skills, competencies, experience and geographic location.
