The Project on Democracy and Capitalism at the Miller Center of Public Affairs seeks applicants for an Education and Outreach Specialist. This role will lead the facilitation of the Democracy and Capitalism Teachers Institute, a selective program for secondary educators taking place on the University of Virginia (UVA) Grounds for one week during the summer. The Specialist will also work to develop other aspects of the Democracy and Capitalism portfolio for K-12 educators, including coordinating field trips for teachers and educators, virtual and in-person workshops for educators, and the establishment of publicly available database of educator resources (modules, lesson plans, classroom activities, etc.). This individual will be a key player in the development of the Project's portfolio related to K-12 education, and will represent the interests of this key audience within the Project and the university.
Responsibilities: Democracy and Capitalism Summer Institutes (50%) The Education and Outreach Specialist will lead the coordination of the Democracy and Capitalism Teachers Institute, a week-long, selective professional development opportunity for secondary educators taking place during summer 2025, and may contribute to additional summer institute programs the Project plans to launch in subsequent years. Duties include:
Educational Outreach (30%) The Education and Outreach Specialist will coordinate various programs for K-12 educators and students throughout the academic year, including:
Resource Development and Management (15%) The Education and Outreach Specialist will coordinate the development (and ongoing management) of a free, accessible database for educators designed to aggregate and curate classroom resources related to democracy, capitalism, civics, and related topics. Other Duties (5%) The Education and Outreach Specialist may occasionally support large-scale Democracy and Capitalism events/programs (example, on-site support for a major annual conference). Salary Range The anticipated salary range for this position is $52,000.00-62,000.00, depending on qualifications. Physical Demands The job requires daily computer use and occasional walking, standing, and minor physical tasks (ex. setting tables for an event, walking with Institute participants between event locations, and managing storage of Institute materials weighing ~20 pounds or less). Occasional travel may be required. Additional Position Information The Project on Democracy and Capitalism offers a flexible and hybrid workplace. This position is eligible for remote work although in-person presence in our Charlottesville, Virginia office is sometimes required. All team members must have access to and maintain a secure home office environment with high-speed internet service. This is a full time, exempt level position eligible for UVA benefits.
