Job Summary

The Staff Research Associate I/II will provide research assistance for the Gaensler Laboratory in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, Department of Medicine. The research program in the Gaensler laboratory focuses on the application of genetic engineering strategies for the treatment of hematologic disorders, the development of stem cell transplantation approaches, and the design of immunotherapeutic strategies for the treatment of acute myelogenous leukemia. The position requires a background in breeding, screening, and surgery in mouse models and proficiency in molecular biology techniques such as cloning, isolation of DNA and RNA, PCR and RTPCR. The incumbent should have experience with tissue culture of primary and established cell lines. Familiarity with gene therapy approaches using AAV and lentiviral vectors would be preferred. Experience with immunological techniques including ELISA, MLR, and ELISPOT, FACS assays and with culture of hematopoietic cells and assays of hematopoietic function would is desirable. Projects focus on novel murine models of stem cell transplantation and the development of immune therapies for leukemia.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $28.04 - $45.09 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Division of Hematology/Oncology is the largest Division in the Department of Medicine. Currently, the Division has 82 Full-time faculty, 11 part-time and/or volunteer faculty, 29 ACGME and non-ACGME fellows, 22 post-doctoral fellows, 32 Non-faculty appointments and 48 administrative and research staff. The Division's primary research, clinical and teaching functions are primarily split between the Parnassus and Mission Bay campuses, although the faculty, fellows, and staff have appointments and clinical, research, and educational activities at ZSFG, and VAMC as well.

Required Qualifications

SRA 1:

  • BA/BS in Biology or related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to handle and prioritize responsibilities pertaining to multiple projects
  • General cell culture technique.
  • Ability to analyze data in spreadsheets, data entry into databases, database management, advanced computer skills.

SRA II:
  • In addition to the above, one or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Note: Classification and salary will depend on the qualifications of the applicant.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Coursework experience with tissue culture (tissue handling, preparation of slides and slide staining)
  • Coursework experience with basic histology (tissue handling, preparation of slides and slide staining)
  • Coursework experience in lab maintenance and assisting team members
  • Coursework experience with preparation with common immunological techniques Experience with small animal surgery, culture of hematopoietic cells and assays of hematopoietic function. Ability to draft routine reports and keep accurate records of work performed
  • Coursework experience with nucleic acid amplification, PCR, cloning
