Summary

Saint Xavier University is seeking an outstanding candidate for the position of Computer Science Lab Coordinator. The role of this professional is to strengthen the Computer Science program and positively impact the retention and graduation rates of students in the major. This will be achieved by providing mentoring and instructional support to students; managing the department's tutoring services; maintaining the department's hardware and software educational resources; and supporting faculty and students conducting lab assignments and research. This Title III grant-funded position is a 2-year appointment that will renewed according to departmental needs.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides instructional support: This is a significant component of the position. The Lab Supervisor (under the supervision of a faculty member) teaches all lab sections of all programming courses and also assists the instructor in all the non-lab sections of these courses as well as offering in-class and extracurricular tutoring.
  • Oversees the distribution of Udemy licenses to upper-level Computer Science students, and works with faculty to utilize the platform as a resource and supplemental learning tool for students to connect learning objectives to real-world content and career possibilities.
  • Maintains departmental hardware and software: This includes maintenance of the department 's S104 lab/classroom and other departmental hardware and software, including a laptop collection, as well as oversight of computer resources required for courses taught in locations other than S104. The maintenance of S104 involves ordering and replacing failed or new hardware, ordering and installing software, keeping the lab free of viruses, reformatting all computers, and reinstalling the software once a semester. It also requires the creation on and updating of user manuals for specialized so ware packages. The maintenance of department web servers includes purchasing necessary hardware and software, creating, deleting, and backing up student and faculty accounts, and maintaining currency on web server security. Overseeing the proper installation and maintenance of computer resources outside of S104 requires coordination with the SXU Department of Informa on Technology.
  • Ad hoc special projects: These occur occasionally throughout the semester and include such projects as the national Hour of Code to introduce programming to K-12 students which takes place at area high schools. Other responsibilities include the training, scheduling, and general oversight of student tutors and maintaining the tutoring and overall calendar for S104.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor Degree (BS) in computer science, Information System, or any other related field.
  • Demonstrated competence in programming, Java and Python preferred.
  • Ability to image computers and install software.
  • Effective interpersonal and mentoring skills.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills
