Summary: Mortenson is looking for a Senior Safety Manager who will provide management, leadership, direction, and support within Mortenson's Zero Injury Safety program for multiple project teams and construction sites. Responsibilities:
- Plan, lead and manage the implementation of delegated Zero Injury Safety Program elements and initiatives throughout the operating group. Lead and support safety program collaboration across multiple different organizations, such as trade partners and joint-venture partners.
- Support company level initiatives through direct effort contribution.
- Take safety leadership for specific region or specialty operation within operating group, acting as a partner to operating group safety director
- Conduct and review site hazard assessments with project management during planning and construction phases.
- Develop operating group specific safety orientation content for use across projects.
- Identify training needs, develop, schedule, and conduct safety training, including train-the-trainer sessions.
- Develop, implement, and lead group and project training and orientation.
- Oversee project documentation, tracking and analysis of all Safety, Injury and Hazard statistics, trend analyses, and OSHA reports. Direct and lead project management in development and follow through on improvement action plans as necessary.
- Monitor onsite construction activities through audits and observations. Document deficiencies and corrective actions.
- Audit, assess and report on group-wide execution of leading performance deliverables.
- Lead incident reporting, investigation, and analysis.
- Coach safety managers in high-risk plan review
- Collaborate with Risk Management department
- Review project work plans to ensure safety is adequately incorporated.
- Participate in and contribute to project planning and hazard analysis.
- Provide professional direction and mentorship to Safety staff.
- Mentor operating group safety engineers and managers, work with managers to provide development opportunities, delegate assignments in order to further growth, host development and learning sessions for safety and others in the operating group
- Take safety leadership for specific region or specialty operation within operating group, acting as a partner to operating group safety director
- Provide technical assistance to project teams, senior executive leadership and safety engineers.
- Maintain operational knowledge of construction safety, OSHA, ANSI, and other applicable standards, regulations, and procedures.
- Act as resource for safety issues or concerns to all project team members and operating group management.
- Attend and/or lead safety meetings.
- Support operating group safety director and safety leadership team in achieving and maintaining operating group safety performance metrics.
- Contribute in the annual review process of operating group safety engineers/managers as requested.
- Effectively work and build relationships with those of diverse backgrounds and organizational levels.
- Assist in incident response for operating group / organization as needed
- Lead team members by example, offer effective coaching and feedback, and effectively manage performance.
- All other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Minimum eight years of experience in a construction safety role or equivalent related experience
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred.
- Organizational and computer skills sufficient to offer management support to multiple project teams, acting as regional/market safety lead within an operating group where appropriate
- Shown positive and professional attitude, and strong customer service skills
- Ability to interpret and communicate Mortenson policies
- Effective public speaking and presentation skills
- Strong teamwork orientation, initiative, communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills
- Ability to coach and influence operating group and project leaders in safety management
- Active listening skills and effective communication including an openness to diverse input and feedback

- Valid driver's license.
Education:
- Bachelor's Degree in safety, occupational health, or related field OR if no Bachelor's degree, high school diploma plus CHST, OSHA 500, and a minimum 14 years of continuous construction experience leading crews and planning work (including at least eight years as a dedicated construction safety professional responsible for managing large project and/or multi-project safety programs, conducting and reviewing hazard analyses and developing controls, conducting safety training, and working with project teams and leadership to plan work activities) and previous experience working on very large, complex projects with a high volume of subcontractor workers and managing a team of safety professionals' preferred.
