Academic Library Services (ALS) is a branch of Academic Affairs and reports through the Provost/ Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs. ALS serves East Carolina University faculty, students, staff and visitors by offering library research and services to support the research, instruction and service goals of the University.
Job Duties
Academic Library Services ( ALS) at East Carolina University ( ECU) is searching for a department head for University History and Records. This faculty position will lead University Archives, which is responsible for acquisition, processing, reference, instruction, consultation, promotion, and other services that ensure that ECU's history is preserved and accessible. The position also serves as the University Records Manager with responsibility for ensuring compliance with and providing education to the ECU community about the University of North Carolina System General Records Retention and Disposition Schedule, related federal and state statutes and regulations, and university and UNC System Office policies. The position reports to the Assistant Director for Special Collections. University History and Records is one of four departments in Special Collections. The department head serves on the ALS Director's Council. The successful candidate is expected to engage in research/creative activities and service at library, university, and professional levels.
The department head will lead a talented team of full-time and student employees that manage ECU's history and records, regardless of format, throughout their life cycle. The department head will guide the team in setting and completing goals; reporting progress; working effectively and collaboratively with internal colleagues, the university community, alumni, donors, and professional colleagues; engaging these groups with ECU history through exhibits, digital collections, finding aids, blog posts, presentations, and other methods; selecting, incorporating, assessing, and improving relevant technologies such as archival management and web archiving systems; defining and communicating department needs; and staying abreast of statutory, regulatory, and policy changes.
The department head will manage university training and outreach related to records management, the records liaison program, and quality assurance related to ECU employees' use of approved online document imaging systems (currently Xtender). They will ensure the efficient and secure operation of the University Records Center while also providing excellent customer service to university departments and offices that use the Center and other records management services. The department head increasing will be involved with records retention and destruction activities for born digital records.

This is a 12 month, fixed-term permanent position. Contingent upon availability of funds.
Minimum Education/Experience
* Graduate degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program or international equivalent
* Certification through the Academy of Certified Archivists, the Institute of Certified Records Managers, or an equivalent organization
* 5 years of experience in archives and/or records management, including archival management and/or records management systems and public service responsibilities
* Knowledge, documented in the cover letter and/or CV, of the issues facing contemporary university archives and records management departments, including data management, privacy, artificial intelligence, patron services, and current and emerging technologies
We intend to hire this position with the faculty title of Library Associate Professor or higher. For appointment as Library Associate Professor, the ALS Unit Code of Operations specifies that a person must have substantial accomplishments in professional performance, collegiality and professional integrity, substantial and continued professional growth, sustained institutional and professional service, and regular contributions to scholarship/creative activity. For appointment as Library Professor, the person must meet the qualifications of Library Associate Professor and provide evidence of sustained and substantive accomplishments in professional performance, superior knowledge and demonstrated mastery of assigned area of specialization, national or international recognition as an authority and leader in the assigned area of specialization, exemplary institutional and professional service, and a sustained and substantive record of scholarship/creative activity.
