Water Treatment Process Engineer

Reimagine What's Possible

The position supports the water treatment processes for a significant portion of Air Products industrial gas production facilities across North America. These facilities include approximately 40 hydrogen/syngas plant and over 100 air separation plants. The utility water unit operations for these plants cover steam and condensate systems, medium/high pressure process gas heat recovery boilers/coils, gas-fired boilers, cooling towers, heat recovery steam generators, water purification (e.g., ion exchange, reverse osmosis, filtration), and steam turbines.

The role is part of the operations process engineering team and works very closely with the plants' operating teams and the North American regional water treatment service company to deliver on the role's objectives.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Provide expert and responsive point-of-contact support to operating teams for questions and issue resolution related to utilities water treatments systems, procedures, and performance. Train operating and support teams as needed to ensure appropriate competency levels regarding water treatment.

  • Compete regular reviews of water treatment condition monitoring parameters and Key Performance Indicators (KPI) across the industrial gas operations fleet. Provide prompt follow-up with operating teams and/or water treatment service provider to resolve variances to performance targets.

  • Direct and lead targeted assessments of plants to review full water treatment program and procedures including water chemistry/additives, measurements and analysis, level of training, metric performance, and relative equipment performance. Benchmark plant performance and develop Best Practices as appropriate.

  • Identify and develop utility water treatment systems improvement projects to raise asset reliability, reduce costs and/or reduce water usage in support of broader operations productivity and sustainability goals.

  • Provide technical review and recommendations, via MOC process, on proposed changes to any aspects of water treatments systems, including chemical additives, water quality, process equipment operating conditions, etc.

  • Support non-conformance event investigations and root cause analysis where water treatment was a contributing factor, i.e., incidents involving corrosion, fouling, or poor water utility unit performance.

  • Collaborate with engineering support team to ensure consideration of impact to water treatment performance regarding proposed changes in plant equipment, process conditions, plant testing, and other plant support efforts.

  • Review Engineering team proposals for new industrial gas plant water treatment design, including additive programs, operating limits, and equipment. Provide regular feedback to Engineering team regarding relevant performance and experiences/learning from the operating fleet.

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Engineering preferred; Chemistry degrees will be considered.

  • 5-10 years relevant experience

  • Experience in water treatment systems support and/or design; particularly boilers, cooling towers, ion exchange demineralizers and reverse osmosis.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to foster an environment of open communication, innovation, and trust.

  • Detail oriented with strong follow through. Must be able to organize and prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

  • Knowledge of industrial gas technologies, processes, and/or plants is beneficial. Additional plant operations support is valued - e.g. refinery operations and processes, water treatment facilities.

  • .Quantitative, value-driven, decision making.

  • Travel throughout North America (primarily USA and Canada) as required; expected travel level is approximately 30%.
