GENERAL PURPOSE The Director, Human Resources is responsible for providing leadership and guidance to Human Resources staff; organizational development initiatives; policies and programs covering employment, compensation, benefits, performance management, employee engagement, employee relations, recruiting and retention; workforce systems; and compliance with all applicable federal, state and local laws. This role partners with VP, Human Resources to support all Company functions. This position is responsible for maintaining knowledge of regulatory changes affecting employment-related matters and guiding the Human Resources team to meet goals and objectives. DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES Position implements human resource strategies by evolving outcomes from strategic intent. Leverages an entrepreneurial approach to create solutions. The Director is an internal consultant to organizational leaders and partners with them to create effective teams and plan for future growth, including the following:
- Participate in strategic workforce planning within the organization, including defining staffing needs
- Provide leadership and consulting support to leaders to achieve corporate objectives and business growth
- Streamline business processes to maximize efficiency and effectiveness within the department
- Oversee the development and deployment of:
- employee engagement and culture building initiatives;
- employee recruitment and retention;
- compliance and reporting;
- organizational structure and development;
- employee relations;
- performance management and organization feedback;
- training and professional development;
- Human Resources team development
- Provide strategic support to leaders in areas of:
- Coaching leaders through organization, business, and team issues;
- Coaching leaders to create and maintain a work environment with high morale, engagement, and productivity;
- Stay current on recent federal, state and legal changes and monitor labor law updates and newsletters for changes that affect HR. Craft, communicate, and educate policy information as laws indicate or as appropriate
- Answer any questions and/or requests by governmental agencies, including employee complaints; represent the company at hearings
Leadership and Project Management:

- Project manage HR programs such as employee forums or other communication programs, the annual benefit open enrollment, performance and compensation management program, company events, etc.
- Proactively review and recommend changes in HR practices, programs and initiatives, maintain compliance with federal and state employment regulations, and provide a full range of assistance and service in the functional areas of human resources to support and enhance the Company's culture
- Work with VP, Human Resources to construct annual HR business plan; determine department initiatives, goals, and metrics; analyze and recommend strategies to improve department effectiveness
- Participate on committees and special projects; support and/or lead department special or cross-functional project teams as assigned
- Conduct periodic audits of human resource activities to ensure activities are compliant
- As directed or as necessary, participate on committees and special projects or lead special and cross-functional project teams
- Understand workplace hazards and take steps to proactively prevent and report hazards or injuries in the workplace. Cooperate in safety programs, initiatives, and investigations
Team Leadership & Guidance:
- Provide leadership, guidance and direction in all aspects of direct reports' employment-related activities including recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, professional development, performance management, and recognition
- Provide effective and appropriate coaching and positive/constructive feedback to direct reports to foster a positive team atmosphere; ensure personal and professional development of direct reports
- Plan, assign, and oversee the goals, goal achievement, and work product of direct reports
- Coach direct reports on managing complex and diverse employee-related situations
- Consistently support compliance by maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of information, protecting the assets of the organization, acting with ethics and integrity, reporting non-compliance, and adhering to applicable laws and regulations and the Company's policies and procedures
JOB REQUIREMENTS Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Proven knowledge and application of HR practices, principles and applicable employment laws and regulations
- Proven ability to apply and adapt practices and techniques to the requirements of senior management and to effectively interact with employees at all levels within the Company
- Proven ability to successfully manage broker and vendor relationships
- Proven ability to present facts and recommendations effectively in oral and written form
- Proven ability to work independently and as a member of a team
- Analytical ability to develop and maintain relevant HR metrics
- Excellent project management and planning skills, while providing high attention to details
- Effective team building skills
- Ability to multi-task and manage several projects at one time
- Proven ability to make sound decisions within established guidelines
- Must be able to function in a deadline driven environment
- Must have the ability to make recommendations to effectively resolve problems or issues by using judgment that is consistent with standards, practices, policies, procedures, regulation or government law
- Ability to demonstrate flexible and efficient time management and to appropriately prioritize workload based upon organization or department needs
- Proven ability to manage people; train and motivate employees at all levels, as well as delegate effectively
- Must possess high degree of professionalism and ability to handle confidential information
- Excellent computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, HRIS)
Minimum Education and Experience Required:
- A bachelor's degree and ten (10) years progressive Human Resources experience, with at least three (3) years in human resources management; or any appropriate combination of education and experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional or Senior Professional in Human Resources certification (PHR/SPHR and/or SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP)
- Multi-site/multi state experience preferred
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required (for the majority of the working day) to sit and make coordinated movements of the fingers for using a keyboard.
- General office environment
- Regular shop assembly/distribution center environment
- Requires regular ground travel to other company facilities within local metropolitan area
- Long-distance (international) or air travel as needed - not to exceed 10% travel
