Summary

Involves developing, implementing, and monitoring environmental and safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations, and to ensure a safe and sustainable workplace.

Manages or has responsibilities across multiple disciplines within the Environmental, Health and Safety job family. #LI-VB1

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for respective Region's compliance with applicable regulations promulgated by state and federal agencies.
  • Manage the Regional EHS Department personnel ( in accordance with EHS Policies and Procedures.
  • Perform assessment of Region's EHS performance and identify practices for continual improvement.
  • Review scopes for work and bid specifications for inclusion of EHS requirements.
  • Prepare EHS budgets for materials, supplies and contractor services.
  • Directly supervise employees.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to organize and present budgetary requirements.
  • Computer skills and applications understanding of workplace productivity software such as spreadsheets, word processing, email, databases, collaboration, etc.
  • Establish daily work priorities, planning assignments, allocating resources, organizing and managing work. Ability to effectively manage/direct actions of employees at remote operating facilities
  • Cooperative leadership style and negotiating skills are essential. Must be able to shape consensus at senior levels among divergent interests.
  • Wide ranging knowledge across overlapping disciplines; can represent the Authority/Canals in industry-wide gatherings, regulatory sponsored scientific panels and legislative hearings.
  • Knowledgeable in EH&S management issues in other industries through job experience or professional associations.
  • Ability to make presentations to technical audiences and senior management; can produce manuscript quality written reports. Must be able to communicate complex engineering and regulatory issues to technical staff at operating facilities.
  • Understands labor contracts and/or employee relations and is able to drive resolution of difficult issues.
Education, Experience and Certifications
  • Bachelor's degree, in environmental science/engineering, occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene or a related technical degree.
  • Master's Degree in related field, Professional Engineer, Safety Professional (CSP), Industrial Hygienist (CIH), advanced management training, a plus
  • Minimum 4 years of directly related experience within an industrial/utility environment
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration), DOSH (Department of Occupational Safety & Health), NFPA (National Fire Protection Association).
Physical Requirements
  • Up to 20% travel primarily within NY State.
  • Physical ability to access Authority facilities is necessary on a routine basis.
  • Valid Driver's License

The New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The estimated salary range for this position is: $118,470.00 - $162,890.00. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates' relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
