Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Administrative Director, the Practice Manager will be responsible for supervising the daily operational, human resource, administrative and business functions of Lakeshore Family Medicine practice. S/he will work independently and have primary responsibility for the supervision of all practice administrative staff at the Lakeshore Family Medicine clinic. S/he will have joint supervisory responsibility of day to day operations with the Administrative Nurse Manager. The Practice Manager must have the ability to lead and prioritize multiple projects and work well with staff, patients and providers. The Practice Manager role is a professional leadership role that functions with a high degree of independence, initiative, assertiveness, and diplomacy, which are necessary in dealing with faculty, staff and patients in a complex environment. The Practice Manager must be able to assess and confidently respond to situations with limited information, prioritize workload, develop creative win-win solutions, and make recommendations.

The Practice Manager is actively involved in all aspects of facility management, day-to-day operations, implementation of a revised practice model, and development and implementation of a revised staffing plan based on workflow changes resulting from an electronic medical record implementation. The Practice Manager will be a key participant in program expansion as additional services are added or reconfigured.

Reports to the Administrative Director of UCSF Primary Care. This position works closely with the UCSF Primary Care Administrative Director and Medical Directors in support of departmental goals. Oversees approximately 10 administrative staff.

Manages the operations of healthcare clinic(s) or center (s) to include fiscal, human resources, and practice management operations.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $105,900 - $180,700 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Family Medicine Center at Lakeshore offers high-quality primary care for both pediatric and adult patients. This faculty practice has approximately 18 primary care physicians, and four advanced practice providers to provide comprehensive preventative care, management of chronic conditions, and prenatal care.

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS in business, health care administration or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3-5 Years of related experience in a similar role
  • Project management and/or application system implementation experience.
  • Clinic / center management experience, with progressive expertise in practice management, scheduling, customer-service methods, incident reporting, regulatory compliance, accreditation requirements, and information technology.
  • Proven ability to organize, manage multiple priorities, and delegate work functions efficiently.
  • Demonstrated managerial skills and human resources management knowledge, including staff deployment, resource utilization, budgeting and financial management, quality improvement, and program planning and implementation.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills to convey complex information, instructions, and guidelines in a clear, concise, and specific manner, and to influence and persuade all levels of staff.
  • Knowledge of relevant healthcare and clinic operations information technology, including billing systems and patient care workflows and processes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing, and compliance environments.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and experience working in a highly regulated environment.
  • Proven competence in health services administration and patient service improvements.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in MS office products.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to tolerate and guide staff through uncertainty, and manage expectations of others under pressure.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Previous experience in medical office registration, scheduling and, or, billing. Knowledge / experience with IDX and/or EPIC software utilization and installation.
  • Previous experience in an academic medical center or teaching clinic with medical students or residents
