Job Summary

The duration for this role is approximately 6 months

Location: Primarily St. Mary's (St. Francis on occasion)

The PBX Operator answers all incoming calls to the hospital and routes them to the appropriate locations. He/she also uses the overhead paging system to inform and direct. In the event of a telecommunications disruption, uses and monitors backup systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Answers incoming calls; routes them quickly and appropriately per department and hospital guidelines (including customer service, confidentiality, department-specific directions, information noted in the daily logbook, etc.).
  • Responds efficiently and accurately to emergency situations, following department and hospital guidelines. Maintains understanding of all emergency procedures when codes and drills occur.
  • Monitors alarms and other equipment for possible malfunction or activation of emergency procedures. Maintains and takes initiatives to improve and understanding of hospital equipment and alarm systems.
  • Maintains logbooks and information relating to daily hospital needs (e.g. Code Red book, Code Blue book, general information book, etc.). Logs are clear, accurate, and reflect the needs of requesting departments.
  • As assigned, works on special projects or tasks for the department.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • One year recent hospital PBX operator experience or PBX operator in a high volume environment.
  • Basic computer literacy/CRT skills; typing and/or keyboard ability; working knowledge of (or aptitude for ) medical terminology; basic and practical clerical skills.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Some post high school formal training preferred.
