Job Description Summary:This position is responsible for the fabrication of precision parts and instruments. This role requires a strong foundation in basic machining skills and the ability to operate a variety of machine tools to produce high-quality components.

Performs basic programming, sets up, and operates CNC and other fabrication equipment to transform design concepts into tangible prototype parts while ensuring, through inspection, that prototypes meet defined specifications and function. Position Details:

What You Will Do

Here is a brief summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in this role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Applies skill in machining procedures and print reading to set up and operate various machine tools to produce parts. Performs basic programming of CNC machines. Sets up, runs, and maintains equipment, including 3-axis mills, lathes, water jet cutters, and other standard machine shop equipment, tools, and machines. Fabricates necessary jigs and fixtures. Uses inspection tools to inspect parts of the drawing.

  • Assembles, tests, modifies, installs, and repairs instruments and equipment as required.

  • Consult with the Shop Supervisor and/or Lead Prototype Machinist to understand project requirements and processing techniques for the fabrication and/or machining of parts. Reports project status and difficulties encountered. Performs all duties and responsibilities in compliance with all applicable OSHA safety regulations.

Education and Experience (Required):

  • Completion of a relevant machine trade vocational program or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities REQUIRED:

  • Skill in the set-up and operation of various types of machinery and equipment used in prototype manufacturing

  • Skill in using precision measurement tools such as micrometers and calipers to ensure prototypes meet specifications.

  • Skill in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, informal sketches, verbal instructions, and other technical documents to create prototypes.

  • Skill in using CAM software to design jigs and fixtures and to generate basic machining code for CNC machines.

  • Good attention to detail ensures all parts and prototypes are manufactured to specifications.

  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and general workplace safety rules.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Desired but Not Required:

  • Sheet Metal Fabrication: Skill in operating shears, punch presses, brake presses, and other sheet metal fabrication machinery to cut, shape, bend, and form sheet metal components according to engineering drawings and specifications.

  • Welding: Holds AWS welding certification or willingness to achieve the AWS certification within one year.

  • CAM: Demonstrated skill programming in GibbsCAM
