GENERAL SUMMARY:

Responsible for providing care to complex cardiovascular patients in the clinic. Determines appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic care plans while working within established standards and practices and while working closely with Bryan Heart Cardiologists. Works closely with all Bryan Heart providers, clinic staff and hospital teams to achieve quality patient care and meet clinical and operational goals.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. *Assesses cardiovascular patients in the clinic and determines appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic care plans.

3. *Assists physicians in providing acute and chronic care to cardiac patients in the clinic setting by performing complete physical exams, obtaining complete medical histories, monitoring therapies, giving injections and medications, and ordering appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures.

4. *Assists physicians in designated out state clinics by performing complete medical histories, monitoring therapies and ordering appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures.

5. *Records findings and appropriately documents patient clinic care in EPIC.

6. *Instructs patient and family regarding medications and treatment instructions.

7. Consults and communicates with other staff, patients, physicians and administrator, as necessary.

8. *Manages medical and surgical emergencies, including use of CPR.

9. Monitors exercise and pharmacologic stress testing.

10. *Remains current in advances in cardiovascular care and, where relevant, translates this knowledge into clinical practice.

11. Participates in continuing education and maintains professional certifications and affiliation.

12. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

13. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.

14. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Maintains clinical competency as required for the unit including but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patient's growth and developmental needs, annual skill competency verification and mandatory education and competencies.

2. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

3. Knowledge of local, state and federal regulations related to nursing and medical services within practice area.

4. Knowledge of care of the critical and complex patient and their medications possible side effects on patients with co-morbidities.

5. Knowledge of process improvement and change management principles within the healthcare environment.

6. Knowledge of professional regulations and practices in giving and evaluating patient care.

7. Knowledge of patient, family and staff education requirements.

8. Knowledge of medical clinic safety hazards and precautions.

9. Ability to incorporate diverse teaching strategies relating to documentation requirements to achieve quality management, clinical and operational goals.

10. Ability to perform physician exam of the complex patient.

11. Ability to evaluate the patient treatment needs by reviewing past medical/surgical history, performing physical exam and required follow up exams.

12. Ability to facilitate change and manage projects through analysis, key end user engagement, and consensus building within an interdisciplinary environment.

13. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

14. Ability to effectively organize and prioritize projects managing time working with minimal supervision.

15. Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the clinical theoretical processes as they relate to patient care.

16. Ability to problem solving and engage independent critical thinking skills.

17. Ability to work independently, take direction and work collaboratively with other health team members from diverse backgrounds.

18. Ability to develop effective working relationships with all co-workers, clinical and non-clinical colleagues.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Master of Science degree in Nursing with current Advance Practice Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska required. Certification as an Adult Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner or other related specialty area required, OR, Master of Science in Physician Assistant & certification through AAPA and current State of Nebraska Physician Assistant license required. Certification with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration for prescriptive authority required. Minimum of three (3) years clinical practice experience preferred.

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:

Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required. Bryan Health recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals) and the Military Training Network. Advanced Life Support (ACLS) is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

(Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.)

Characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects including the human body. Ability to assist 100+ pound patients to exam tables and push wheelchair bound patients. Exposure to blood, waste, body fluids, and communicable diseases.
