JOB SUMMARY
LOCATION: John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital (Emergency Medicine)
SHIFT: 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM (36 hours per week/72 hours per pay period)
Salary is commensurate to years of RN experience. The Clinical Nurse I is a registered professional nurse who is responsible and accountable for providing safe, effective and individualized Emergency Nursing care for patients and supportive care to significant others. Emergency Nursing care involved application of nursing process and utilizing technical skills for patient care delivery in an Emergency Department setting. These activities require nursing judgment base on application of scientific principles of nursing, problem solving skills and demonstrated teaching/learning experiences. Typical Duties * Performs admission assessment on assigned patients upon arrival to the Emergency Room. * Obtains assessment information from patients/significant others as appropriate. * Collects assessment data as a basis for formulating nursing diagnosis and provide appropriate age specific care relative to the following factors: biophysical, psychosocial, and environmental, self-care capabilities, safety, infection control, learning needs and ability to manage continuing care needs after discharge. * Performs ongoing and scheduled reassessments according to divisional/unit standards. * Performs transfer and discharge assessments on assigned patients when transferred/discharged from the department. * Demonstrates knowledge of decontamination process. * Identifies, plans and cares for the total needs of patients taking into consideration the age specific needs of patient in assigned area of responsibility. * Applies knowledge of standard operating policies and procedures. * Establishes nursing diagnosis, desired outcomes, and interventions from collected assessment data. * Collaborates with patient, significant other and other health care team members in planning care during hospitalization. * Collaborates with patient, significant other and other health care team members for anticipated discharge needs. * Develops nursing plan of care that is consistent with the therapies of other disciplines, is based on patient outcomes and nursing practice standards. Considers the culture, spiritual values, and patient age relative to biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, self-care capabilities, safety, infection control, learning needs and discharge planning needs. * Communicates with patient and significant others the nursing plan of care. * Performs interventions in a competent, skillful and safe manner. * Prioritizes interventions according to patient needs. * Applies principles of growth and development across the life span in providing care appropriate to the age-specific needs of the neonate/infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric client. * Provides education to patient and significant other based on assessed learning needs. * Performs the technical aspects of care according to established practice standards. * Demonstrates competence in the safe and effective use of clinical equipment. * Performs or directs cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other lifesaving interventions. * Demonstrates competence in applying the principles of BSIS, isolation and asepsis. * Evaluates patient's responses to interventions performed and document appropriately. * Modifies and implements interventions as appropriate. * Re-evaluates patient's response. * Records accurately, concisely, and legibly in black ink or in the electronic medical record the following information: assessment, reassessment, and plan of care, interventions and patient's responses. * Signs documentation with legible signature and classification. * Performs charge nurse/team leader responsibilities competently when assigned. * Provides general direction, guidance, and coordination of patient care given by other levels of nursing staff. * Demonstrates ability to communicate accurately, clearly and concisely, orally, written and electronically. * Demonstrates caring and respectful attitude in verbal and nonverbal communications. * Communicates pertinent information to patient, physician, nurses, and other healthcare team members as appropriate. * Maintains confidentiality in all patient related information. * Provides privacy for patients/family. * Treats patient/family with respect and courtesy. * Takes appropriate actions to address ethical concerns. * Performs as resource nurse/ preceptor/mentor to others.. * Assists new staff with information or directions whenever requested and offers assistances as needed. * Conducts cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) drills, fire drills, and patient centered conferences or other unit educational activities as requested or assigned. * Operates equipment correctly and safely necessary for providing patient care in assigned clinical area MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
