Description

The primary responsibility of this position is to assist the staff of the SIU Pediatrics Division of Genetics and Metabolism in the delivery of genetic counseling services to patients and their families. Patients are seen at the St. John's Pavilion Pediatric Specialty Clinic, Decatur Memorial Hospital, Memorial Medical Center, and Simmons Cancer Institute.


Examples of Duties

Service 90%
A. Assist the genetics staff by gathering background information prior to patient appointments. This includes a family pedigree, genetic test reports, and relevant genetics records for the proband and relatives.
B. Compose letters of medical necessity to justify insurance coverage of recommended genetic testing.
C. Maintain a lab-tracking database to ensure proper follow-up of all patients who have undergone testing.
D. Maintain database for the purpose of documenting patient numbers and outcomes.
E. Liaise with genetic testing laboratories:
1. Complete insurance benefit investigations for various genetic tests
2. Make sure all samples and required forms are completed in a timely manner
3. Coordinate reflex or add-on genetic testing.
F. Complete literature reviews to aid in patient care at the direction of the genetics staff.
G. Perform other duties as assigned.

Research 10%

A. Consent patient to IRB approved protocols for the participation in clinical research.
B. Complete literature reviews and draft clinical research manuscripts for submission to be published.


Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree in genetics, biology, chemistry, or another science/ health-related field is required.
2. Experience with Microsoft Office products.
3. Must possess strong organization and multi-tasking abilities.
4. Ability to work independently.
