Overview

RTI International seeks a prospect for the Shelton Jones Statistical Internship within the Social, Statistical, & Environmental Sciences (SSES) unit.

This internship is a contract position. The employment contract is administered by Greene Resources Powered by Array, RTI's supplemental staffing partner.

The Statistics Division of RTI International are recognized leaders in the areas of survey statistics, survey sampling, estimation, and analysis. Statistical leadership ensures quality, validity, and reliability of RTI research efforts through application of quality control and assurance procedures from sampling and design through data collection and analysis. Staff includes over 150 statisticians, biostatisticians, clinicians, and public health analysts. The division provides collaborative and innovative statistical approaches to the design and analysis of research studies and the application of statistical techniques to advance the research enterprise. Staff design and administer high-quality, cost-effective local, regional, and multi-stage, complex national, international surveys with diverse, policy relevant target populations. Additionally, the division optimizes sample designs to minimize cost while meeting precision requirements.

The RTI International Shelton Jones Statistical Intern will be assigned to tasks that advance project or research efforts in the areas of survey statistics, survey sampling, estimation and analysis. Attention will also be given to the application of quality control and assurance procedures from sampling and statistical design through data collection and analysis.

The Shelton Jones Statistical Internship honors the legacy of Shelton M. Jones, a statistician whose career spanned over 35 years at RTI. In 1981, Shelton became the first African American male to graduate with a Master of Science in Statistics from North Carolina State University. This internship honors Shelton's strong commitment to staff development by providing an opportunity for deserving students to advance their careers in the areas of statistics and mathematics.

Learning Objectives:

  • Practical analytical application of statistical programming and survey methods
  • Communication and collaboration skills needed to work in a professional environment
  • Learn RTI's mission and capabilities with an emphasis on the Center Official Statistics

Responsibilities

  • Collaborating on statistical research and analysis
  • Assisting with data cleaning, analysis, and metrics tracking
  • Drafting literature reviews and reviewing manuscripts
  • Benchmarking survey results
  • Assisting in statistical quality control initiatives

RTI's Internship Program emphasizes experiential and mentored learning experiences. Interns are exposed to the institute's mission to improve the human condition through projects, professional development trainings, and networking. Program participants have opportunities to engage with staff and fellow interns virtually and in-person. Each summer, interns are encouraged to participate in RTI's annual internship showcase. Additional Information

This paid internship will take place June 2025 through August 2025. The internship requires a minimum commitment of 32 hours per week. Hours are flexible during business days, Monday through Friday. If the final candidate is local, the internship can be completed in a hybrid capacity from RTI's Headquarters in Research Triangle Park, NC. The team is also open to hiring a non-local candidate that can work fully remote.


Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and should not require now, or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa
  • Currently enrolled junior or senior undergraduate student
  • Strong knowledge of statistical methods, theory, and modeling
  • Proficiency with statistical programming languages (SAS, R) and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to think creatively to solve problems
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of sampling methods and theory
