Position Summary:

The Food Safety Coordinator collaborates with Purchasing, Sales, and Operations to ensure that Food Safety, FDA, and State regulations are properly adhered to. This multi-purpose role aims to improve the company's food safety programs, policies, and procedures. The coordinator will provide professional guidance and direction to ensure the company meets necessary food safety regulatory requirements and laws mandated by the federal government and customer-specific requirements. The Food Safety Coordinator should be an independent, motivated self-starter who values working in a team setting.

Responsibilities:

  • Support and facilitate the focus on attaining and maintaining Federal, State, and Local Regulatory agency requirements and Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) certification for site operations.
  • Interpret, support, and comply with Company, Provincial, and Federal Environmental legislation and regulations as applicable.
  • Oversees pest control programs for the company.
  • Identify and communicate potential environmental, health, and safety concerns to senior management.
  • Implement, support, and comply with all food safety and quality policies/procedures as per BRCGS-GFSI Standards, which include, but are not limited to, Good Distribution Practices, HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points), Food Security, Allergens, Hygiene, government regulations, and customer requirements.
  • Maintain all registries as required by GFSI.
  • Report food safety, quality, and regulatory compliance expectations to division personnel with the authority to initiate action.
  • Maintain and monitor Hold Log and Customer Complaint programs, including root cause analysis, and execute a closed-loop corrective action process, including verification steps.
  • Verify and maintain all records related to the BRCGS Standards Food Safety and Quality system and HACCP.
  • Maintain and monitor Good Distribution Practices trend analysis.
  • As a professional food safety team member, assist in structuring and implementing policy trials and projects.
  • Perform inspection and maintain the Division's calibration matrix by ensuring timely calibration of Test and Measuring equipment.
  • Act as an internal audit program subject matter expert and provide guidance to the division's internal audit teams.
  • Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as required by the Food Safety Director and complete work instructions for work centers and applicable standard operating procedures.
  • Conducted and evaluated employee training related to food safety and compliance matters.

    • Maintaining and verifying food safety software systems like Belltower, Tracegains, Ariba SAP, and Alchemy.
    • Create content and make sure software systems are up to date.


  • Conduct recalls and initiate Belltower during supplier recall events.
  • Follows all policies, procedures, ergonomic standards, and safety requirements directed by BEK and the individual departments.
  • Must work effectively in team environments, communicating and participating constructively.
  • Performs other duties as requested by management and supports business needs as required.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
*Bachelor's Degree in Food Safety or related business field and/or 5+ years of experience working in a food safety and/or supervisory role.
*HACCP, Seafood HACCP, and PCQI certifications are required.
*Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
*Demonstrated leadership skills, critical, analytical, and problem-solving skills
*Demonstrated adult interaction and teaching skills
*Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations in the food industry
*Highly developed interpersonal and observational skills
*Highly professional personal and work ethics and level of integrity
*Proficient computer knowledge experience with MS Office including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
*Ability to understand complex and ever-changing laws and regulations and apply it to company operations as needed
* A valid driver's license is required if driving to perform company business
*Travel availability 30%-40% of the time
Physical Requirements:
*Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
*Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards
*Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 lbs
