Job Description

The Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care Department is responsible for evaluating/treating patients seen on the triage service and treating hospitalized patients in the Intensive Care Unit. This service is looking for veterinary assistants to work alongside students, veterinary technicians, and veterinarians on providing exceptional patient care, coordinating patient flow, and maintaining a safe and clean work environment while ensuring students have a rigorous and supportive training experience within the clinical setting.

Veterinary Assistant job responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist the veterinary technicians and clinicians with triaging patients and critically ill patients
  • Safely restrain, handle, and transport patients
  • Assist with monitoring hospitalized patients
  • Collect samples
  • Perform basic diagnostic procedures as requested within the skill set of the particular assistant, consistent with MVMB guidelines
  • Walking and feeding patients
  • Respond to phone inquiries regarding emergencies and follow-ups
  • Utilize hospital information system and other software for data entry and recording
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the ER, ICU, and department equipment
  • Maintain inventory and stock in the ER and ICU

Veterinarians throughout the Midwest refer animal clients to the Veterinary Health Center for specialized diagnoses and treatment. With sophisticated therapeutic equipment that includes an underwater treadmill, advanced imaging techniques, and groundbreaking equine lameness diagnostic equipment, we are a center for animal healthcare. Our facility, located at Clydesdale Hall, provides state-of-the-art teaching and medical services. In addition to regular check-ups and preventive health care for companion animals and livestock, we feature specialized treatment such as emergency medicine and critical care, soft tissue surgery, dentistry, ophthalmology, neurology, oncology, dermatology, cardiology and orthopedic surgery.

Shift

This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position. The Veterinary Health Center Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care Service is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Schedule are subject to change based on clinic needs and will be discussed during interview. Shifts opportunities may include:

  • Weekdays or weekends
  • Day time hours
  • Evening hours (eligible for shift differential)
  • Overnight hours (eligible for shift differential)
  • Holidays (eligible for holiday pay)
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience working / handling animals is preferred by not required.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $17.00 / hour (additionally, some shifts are eligible for shift differential)
