David Evans and Associates Inc (DEA's) Transit and Rail Group is actively seeking aSenior Civil Design Engineer / Group Leaderto join ourFreight RailTeam. This position can sit in one of ourrail offices (Tacoma, Salt Lake City, Portland, Denver, Fort Worth, or College Station). The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated leader and self-starter, bringing a wealth of experience and technical expertise to a range of multi-disciplinary rail projects. In this role, you will leverage your specialized skills to lead a team to perform design, transforming innovative concept designs into detailed construction drawings and comprehensive technical specifications. Key Responsibilities:

  • Technical Leadership: Serve as a design lead and provide technical expertise on railroad or civil engineering/design projects, including design of utilities, grading, drainage, erosion control, roadway design, site development, terminal, track design and more. Oversee all aspects of project design and ensure compliance with client engineering standards, codes, and regulations ranging from feasibility analysis to final design, and through to construction phase activities (including procurement, bid support, and construction submittals)
  • Construction Documentation Preparation: Prepare, review, and complete detailed construction documents, plans utilizing Bentley OpenRail Designer orBentley MicroStationsoftware, technical reports, specifications, and accurate cost estimates for various projects, confirming thoroughness and clarity.
  • Project Management and Collaboration: Manage projects to ensure timely, budget-conscious, high-quality project deliverables that meet or exceed industry standards.
  • Quality Assurance: Conduct technical reviews of design calculations, estimates, specifications, plans and work produced by other staff. Implement DEA's quality assurance and quality control procedures, maintaining high standards throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Site Engagement: Lead and/or actively participate in project meetings and conduct site visits and field inspections as necessary to maintain project alignment with design specifications and client goals.
  • Post-Design Support: Provide critical post-design construction support services, addressing contractor Requests for Information (RFIs), conducting submittal reviews, assisting in as-built preparation, and performing field observations to maintain design integrity during construction.
  • Coordination: Collaborate effectively with project teams and stakeholders on all aspects of project execution, including project set-up, drafting, design, quality review, and project coordination and organization. Coordinate with other project disciplines including structural, architectural, geotechnical, surveying, and others. Proactively resolve project design issues, facilitate project coordination, and maintain positive relationships with clients and team members to promote a collaborative working environment.
  • Business Development: leading or participating in marketing and contracting activities. Estimate, plan and allocate staff resources to align with project commitments and proposals for future work.
  • Leadership and Mentoring: Manage, lead, and mentor junior engineers and project managers, fostering their professional growth and supporting them in delivering high-quality project contributions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree incivil engineeringor a related engineering field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Minimum of10 years' experiencein civil engineering design, with a focus on freight rail land development projects.Experience within the railroad engineering industry and familiarity with railroad design guidelines, specifications, and design criteria.
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to travel periodically for client visits, business development and project work.
  • Experience with delivering projects for BNSF, UPRR, CPKC, NS and/or industry rail.
  • Proven track record in winning and delivering projects and building transportation business.
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software and communication tools
  • Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and organizational traits. Strong technical writing abilities, and effectiveness in presenting to clients and the public.
  • Ability to plan, organize and supervise work of medium to large staff of professionals and technicians

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Software Proficiency: Expertise inAutoCAD,Civil3D,MicroStation, and/orOpen Roadsfor effective project execution.
  • Preference given to Texas location or proximity to client(s)
  • Proven record with building and maintaining strong client relationships
  • Ability to serve DEA and our clients as a technical expert with recognized authority in an area of specialization.
