Overview

The Staff I Data Engineer will work to design, prototype, and implement a modern submarine data architecture and integrate third party tools in external data management and application development pipelines. This role will also include building and maintaining data pipelines, gathering, and organizing structured and unstructured data, conducting data analysis, and developing data analytic and AI/ML based applications for other undersea forces.

This position is located in Manassas, VA. This position is a hybrid position with remote work options and flexible schedules.


What will you do?

The Staff I Data Engineer will work with a team of DevOps engineers, software developers, data scientists, and system operators to identify data needs and prototype a range of novel solutions. This data engineer would be involved at all levels of the data life cycle from onboard management of data to its use in application development and back to application integration and gathering test data.

  • Lead a small team of junior Data and DevOps engineers
  • Leverage third-party tools to architect and prototype a modern data architecture for undersea systems
  • Build and maintain extract, transform, and load (ETL) data pipelines
  • Design and prototype test cases for the updated data architecture, local and cloud based
  • Perform data analysis of simulated and real-world data
  • Integrate structured and unstructured data from disparate data sources
  • Provide technical input to program managers and government representatives

Do you have what it takes?

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor's Degree, majoring in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related field
  • Proficiency in SQL for data querying and data manipulation
  • 4+ years' experience as a Data Engineer (or similar role) or 3+ years' experience with a relevant Master's degree
  • Experience with third party data management tools (S3, Apache Atlas, Kafka, Kubeflow, etc.)
  • Programming experience in Python, R, or similar data manipulation languages
  • Extensive knowledge of data modeling principles
  • Experience in knowledge extraction and insights from data in various forms, both structured and unstructured
  • Strong understanding of relational and nonrelational databases
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • US Citizen with current SECRET clearance or ability to obtain a SECRET clearance
  • Successful completion of background check.

Desired Qualifications/Skills/Abilities:

  • Master's Degree or higher in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems
  • Experience establishing data pipelines in cloud platforms, such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud
  • Experience using Apache tools, such as Hadoop, Kafka, Spark, and Atlas
  • Data visualization experience
  • Experience leading teams and projects
  • Experience using Git for version control
  • Programming experience in C++ and Java
  • Experience with Linux systems
