POSITION SUMMARY: The Anesthesia Technician, an essential member of the surgical team, assists the anesthesia team prior to, during, and following patient procedures in the Operating Room. There is patient contact while assisting in transport and procedures. Anesthesia tech works collaboratively and participates a the primary assistant to Anesthesia, nursing staff including in but not limited to the Operating room, Endo, L&D, Pacu, EP, and PV lab. Position: Anesthesia Technician Department: Operating Room Schedule: 40 hours, 6:30-3p ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
- Ensures anesthesia carts are supplied in each room at start of day and in between cases.
- Retrieve special anesthesia supplies that are anticipated and/or requested by anesthesia provider(s) in the case.
- Assists in the preparation of complex equipment and supplies for hemodynamic monitoring. Based on the surgical service in the room, may include peripheral, arterial, and pulmonary artery catheter supplies, EKG, pulse oximeter, and nerve stimulators.
- Ensures monitoring equipment and supplies are ready for each case.
- Ensures the anesthesia machine is ready for use. Includes troubleshooting and resolving issues along with the Anesthesia provider. May perform daily anesthesia equipment inspections and readying suction, electrical plugs, gas connections, oxygen, and nitrous oxide: changing cylinders as needed. Changing of cannisters as needed.
- May assist in positioning patients for General and /or spinal procedures.
- Assist anesthesia provider during induction and extubating as directed.
- Restock all used supplies as needed.
- Dispose of contaminated materials in appropriate receptacles.
- Clean and disinfect equipment in accordance with general operating room. policies and procedures, including biohazardous waste.
- Clean anesthesia equipment in off site locations as needed.
- Inventories and orders anesthesia supplies as needed.
- Troubleshoot equipment issues and notifies clinical engineering if needed.
- Assisting anesthesia during emergencies as instructed - including Code Blue
- Assists with required standards for quarterly maintenance of equipment as directed by supervisor.
- Maintains IV solution/supplies per par levels in all peri-operative and procedure areas.
- Disinfects and transports bronchoscopes to CPD for processing following use.
- Utilizes opportunities orienting and precepting team members.
- Assures equipment is returned to proper location after use.
- Assists with surgical suite cleaning to reduce turnover time
- Assures immediate availability of Difficult Airway Cart, restocks and maintains par levels.
JOB REQUIREMENTS All information relative to job or duties are transmitted to senior/supervising staff in a timely manner. Reports potential impacts to patient safety to anesthesia staff, lead tech, circulating RN, OR manager, or VP of Perioperative Services Remove and report all malfunctioning equipment to lead tech. Technicians are accountable to anesthesia staff, residents, OR Manager, Charge RN and other supervising personnel to carry out tasks assigned within the framework of the role. Communicate information in a timely manner. Highly organized with attention to detail needed. Capable of working independently. Excellent interpersonal skills, adaptable, able to respond quickly to constant change. High school graduate or equivalent. Graduate Anesthesia Tech program preferred. BLS One year Anesthesia Tech Experience in Operating Room preferred, or one year in Critical care/Step down unit as a CNA preferred. Strong mechanical skills required.
