The engineer will provide innovative solutions to complex problems by leading the development of microsystems that integrate precision sensors, actuators, optics, and/or novel materials. He or she will need to work across organizations to technically contribute to existing programs, identify new opportunities, develop innovative concepts and write competitive proposals. Candidates should have a MEMS design, analysis and/or fabrication background but be willing to venture into new and unexplored areas. Experience in application areas such as inertial guidance, magnetic sensing, microfluidic systems, biomedical devices, thermoelectric, microelectronics, spacecraft, energy storage, radiation physics, and related topics is beneficial but not required. The candidate will be expected to work effectively in a team environment, mentor junior engineers, write proposals, and communicate progress and results through published reports and presentations.

The ideal candidate will have a MS or PhD degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science, physics or a related field with 10 or more years of experience. Desired skills include:

*Experience designing and/or fabricating micromechanical devices and systems
*Deep multi-physics expertise modeling devices and systems using modern commercial simulation tools (COMSOL, ANSYS, Matlab/Simulink, TCAD, etc...).
*Ability to develop creative solutions to complex systems problems by leveraging novel MEMS device development, nuclear physics, materials, optics and related technologies.
*Ability to work with program managers and customers to define needs/requirements, write-proposals, and lead technical teams.
*Desire to mentor junior staff.

Job Description:

Duties/Responsibilities
* Designs and develops Microelectromechanical devices/sensors, schematics and physical layouts of integrated MEMS components or packaged assemblies.
* Assesses performance and process capabilities of potential MEMS device designs using modeling or simulation software.
* Tests and evaluates devices using a variety of tools, protocols, and software.
* Analyzes and addresses issues such as reliability, yield improvement, and/or failure.
* Develops production methods and fabrication processes for MEMS.
* Drafts documentation such as operating instructions, performance specifications, and manuals.
* Shares performance experience and operating characteristics with designers or other engineers for new product development purposes and/or training.
* Develop and maintain effective internal/external relationships.
* Independently drive solutions to complex problems - develop requirements, propose ways forward when customer requirements are unclear or incomplete, and adapt appropriately to changes in requirements.
* Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in their discipline.
* Able to provide insight and suggest design or process modifications based on quantitative data or results.
* Identify program/system-level technical risks and develop and execute mitigation strategies for them.
