Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, follows established policies and procedures to perform a variety of routine technical and clerical support tasks that are integral to the operation of the Pharmaceutical Department. Assists Pharmacists in dispensing medication and maintains appropriate patient records. Orders, stocks, and distributes inventory throughout the pharmacy and the institution while maintaining accurate levels of inventory. Maintains competencies required as a Certified Pharmacy Technician. Performs other duties and responsibilities as related to specified technician function and/or assigned by the department and the institution.
Job Responsibilities:
- Assists pharmacists in medication dispensing areas. Fills prescriptions under the direct supervision of the pharmacists. Assists patients and family at the pharmacy window and refers questions to a pharmacist when necessary. Assists in processing mail-out orders. Delivers medications to the appropriate patient care areas. Assists in compounding medications that are not readily available from the manufacturer.
- Maintains appropriate patient records. Accurately files and maintains patient care records. Completes charges/credits in a timely and accurate manner. Maintains accountability records and performs routine audits.
- Performs dispensing functions in the intravenous program. Aseptically prepares parenteral nutrition solutions, antibiotics and other medications for parenteral use, including home infusion therapies. Maintains a working knowledge of delivery systems and devices used to prepare and administer parenteral products and assures that all work is checked by a pharmacist before dispensing. Stocks and reorders supplies from warehouse for daily replenishment and works closely with pharmacists and warehouse staff to project reorder needs for weekend and holiday periods.
- Facilitates workflow for the inpatient dispensing area. Accurately fills unit dose medications including the unit dose fill list. Prioritizes the processing of orders as entered by centralized and decentralized pharmacists. Assesses and replenishes nursing floor stock and Pyxis stock, including controlled substances, in a timely manner. Delivers medications to the appropriate patient care areas. Replenishes stock supplies for all emergency supply carts (e.g., crash carts, tackle boxes, ACU-related auxiliary drug supplies such as the Anesthesia Drug Carts). Stocks and reorders supplies from warehouse for daily replenishment and works closely with pharmacists and warehouse staff to project reorder needs for weekend and holiday periods.
- Maintains competencies required as a certified pharmacy technician. Maintains current certification and state registration as a pharmacy technician. Participates in orientation, education, and training programs. Reviews literature and other materials as assigned. Completes all competencies and skills assessment requirements.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or directed in order to meet the goals and objectives of the department and the institution.
- Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
Minimum Education and/or Training:
- High school diploma/GED is required. Graduate of a certified pharmacy technician training program is preferred.
Minimum Experience:
- Four (4) years of pharmacy experience is required with a high school diploma/GED.
- No experience is required for a graduate of a certified pharmacy technician training program.
- Hospital pharmacy experience with parenteral and unit dose medication preparation preferred. Experience with office computer software applications is preferred.
Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required by Law:
- (LC: PHRMTCH-TN) Registration of Pharmacy Technician License with the State of Tennessee required. Registration must be renewed every two (2) years.
Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required by SJCRH Only:
- (LC: PTCB-PTECH) Pharmacy Technician Certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) required.

This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $20.50 - $34.50 per hour for the role of Certified Pharmacy Technician I.
