Role Description:

The Water Services Worker 11 is responsible for conducting investigations based on customer complaints and taking appropriate corrective action.



Essential Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Conducts field investigations of reports of water leaks. Uses various mechanical and electric devices to pinpoint location and nature of leaks. Listens at mains, hydrants, service pipes, meters, curb cocks, etc., to determine the location of leak, using aquaphones, geophones, dip needles, pressure detecting gages and electronic detectors.
  • Responsible for making minor repairs of leaks at meters and "cc" when necessary. Determines whether the leaks are in public space or on private property. Serves repair notices if on private property and provides temporary water until the service lines can be repaired when on public space when possible.
  • Schedule and executes shutoff. Schedules should minimize interference with traffic flow and inconvenience to the consumer. Performs routine and emergency repairs for water mains and services of all sizes.
  • Identifies issues related to coordination with other utilities and municipal service providers.
  • Prepares and submits daily reports of completed work assignments.
  • Provides guidance and assistance to lower graded workers.
  • Complies with applicable safety rules and regulations.
  • Performs FM flow tests.
  • Performs underground investigations.
  • Performs turn on and turn off in response to non-payments.
  • Operates Authority vehicles as an essential function of the position. Maintains vehicles and/or equipment in a clean and orderly manner. Reports any operating deficiencies to the appropriate Authority personnel.
  • Performs other related duties and projects as assigned at the discretion of the immediate supervisor.
  • The incumbent is subject to being placed on call during hours and schedule identified by the Authority and is required to work overtime during emergencies.
  • Incumbent is required to work shift work, holidays and weekends.

The qualifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability necessary for an

Required Experience:
Five (5) years of progressive experience and expected to have a thorough knowledge of all sections and functions of the Department or
Five (5) years of demonstrated experience involving working in the installation and/or maintenance of water services and cross-connection devices.
Minimum Education Requirements:
High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate
Required Skills:
Knowledge of the city's main system. Expected to have full knowledge of all Water Services sections and functions
Skill in reading and understanding various pressure and defuser gauges used for measuring water pressure. Ability to read and interpret pertinent water, sewer and construction plats, maps and drawings.
Excellent communication skills.
Required Licenses & Certifications:
Must possess and maintain a valid Motor Vehicle Operating License and a D.C. Water Vehicle Endorsement.

Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
Subject to indoor and/or outdoor environmental conditions that include exposure to extreme cold and/or hot temperatures.
Subject to noise, vibration, and hazards from a variety of physical conditions.
Subject to atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system or skin such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation, or to exposure to oils or other cutting fluids.
