About the Job

Position Overview

This position is responsible for evaluation and implementation of all TRIO Upward Bound (UB) academic services including academic year tutoring and classroom instruction (4 classes during the academic year) and all instruction during the summer program (14 total classes delivered daily). This position oversees high school student academic progress and develops holistic academic intervention strategies and services to influence positively the programs ability to meet federal secondary school program objectives and prepare students for academic rigors of college.

The Academic Coordinator must stay abreast of best practices in tutoring, training, curriculum development and evaluation, behavior management, Minneapolis Public Schools graduation requirements and curriculum design and implementation changes/policies, youth development, culturally responsive educational practices and college readiness indicators. The Academic Coordinator interviews, hires, trains, supervises and monitors performance for 15-20 support staff each academic year and 15 instructional staff each summer.

Job Responsibilities

Direct Service and Instruction (35%)

  • Develop, revise and implement curriculum that is holistic, effective, and in accordance with federal mandates and educational best practices relevant to contrasting student demographics, supporting and/or supplementing Minneapolis Public High School curriculum and graduation requirements for participants.
  • Set curriculum objectives per class, evaluate effectiveness and implement lesson plans that are developmentally appropriate (i.e., overseeing ACT curriculum and waivers, ensure all 11th graders register and take the ACT).
  • Track student performance, monitor attendance, and provide regular feedback on participant performance. Provide recommendations to advisors regarding student intervention services using a Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework to increase students' academic proficiency.
  • Instruct one or more classes during the academic year and/or summer. Serve as backup tutor and instructor for classes and tutorial services as needed for effective delivery of academic services.
  • Assist with student recruitment including providing marketing presentations at target schools, meeting with recruits and families, representing the program at open houses and other school/community events, auditing student and parent applications, and meeting with school officials and editing marketing materials.
  • Chaperone students to conferences, evening activities, college visits and classroom field trips as assigned.

Program Development & Operations (35%)

  • Assist with the design and implementation of holistic family education workshops and orientation sessions geared toward students and families from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Reserve rooms and facilities for school year and events.
  • Ensure compliance is met when planning instructional staff field trips and off-site workshops.
  • Annually implement and evaluate academic program initiatives, including: summer academic courses and academic year after school (component) courses, tutoring program, and educational events/activities.
  • Monitor, track, report and archive all academic program services including student attendance, component performance, and tutoring intervention services. Track and prepare progress reports underscoring student progress in meeting TRIO UB program expectations and federally mandated objectives 4 times each year.
  • Identify and secure partnerships with internal and external stakeholders including CEHD departments, Minneapolis Public Schools, and non-profit agencies to increase efficiency in services and support innovative, engaging and effective curriculum and academic workshop services.
  • Implement an after school snack program in collaboration with the office manager and ensure compliance with grant guidelines.
  • Maintain, update and create academic program forms; present/explain forms and represent the overall academic program structure and participant requirements to parents and staff during annual orientations and family meetings
  • Manage and track student monthly performance stipend using an online payment platform.
  • Organize, audit and maintain all academic related supplies on & off-site.

Supervision and Training (20%)

  • Annually recruit, interview, hire and train approximately 30 part-time academic support staff (teachers, teaching assistants and tutors) and volunteers for academic year and summer services to implement developed curriculum.
  • Provide ongoing training to academic year and summer staff. Develop schedule, training methods, evaluate effectiveness, draft manual and/or materials, analyze training modes, and devise new ones when necessary.
  • Provide classroom observation in order to assess, evaluate and provide regular feedback on staff performance and provide necessary coaching to ensure TRIO UB policies, regulations and procedures are being executed properly by all academic staff.
  • Update job descriptions for academic program positions, based on University of Minnesota hiring standards and in accordance with grant guidelines and funding.
  • Regularly communicate with all academic staff regarding program expectations, including student work, tutoring, concerns (academic or behavior), and schedule.

Other (10%)

  • Serve on College or all-University committees at the Director's request.
  • Stay abreast of changes K-12 and higher ed policies impacting grant programming.
  • Participate in scholarly activities including research that informs program practices.
  • Contribute to staff planning initiatives and staff meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree, plus four years of related professional experience or a master's degree with two years of relevant professional experience
  • Experience in classroom instruction and/or curriculum development, preferably at the secondary school level
  • Experience working in a diverse setting and/or in an urban environment
  • Supervisory experience
  • Strong database and computer proficiency
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in education, human services, youth development, psychology, sociology, or related field
  • Relevant experience working with TRIO/Upward Bound-like youth in an educational setting, including low-income and first-generation high school students
  • Minimum of four years of experience hiring, training and supervising
  • Experience providing effective academic services to English Language Learning (ELL) populations
  • Demonstrated understanding of Minneapolis Public High School graduation requirements
  • Demonstrated understanding of college preparation and intervention services for high-risk students
  • Ability to speak a foreign language - Spanish, Hmong or Somali
  • Consideration of personal experiences or overcoming barriers similar to those of TRIO program students
About the Department

Department Overview

TRIO UB is a federally funded, U.S. Department of Education equal educational opportunity program designed to generate within our students (and parents), the skills and motivation necessary to both graduate high school and enter and graduate successfully complete a postsecondary degree. TRIO UB annually serves 118 low-income and first generation college bound youth from four high schools in Minneapolis. The program develops and provides intensive, year-round academic services and enrichment programming to engage students, parents, schools administrators and community partners to advance both individual and systemic change.

October - May, TRIO UB services include:

  • Tutoring intervention services Monday - Thursday (3pm-6pm)
  • Four non-credit academic courses by grade
  • Student & parent educational workshops and planning meetings
  • Leadership and capacity building conferences, travel opportunities, and programming
  • Advising and coaching on academic planning and goal-setting, college access and fit, scholarships, financial aid, employment, college housing, college transitions, etc.
  • In-school advocacy
  • In-state and national college and university tour

June - August, TRIO UB summer services include:

  • Five weeks of non-credit academic instruction for rising 10-12th graders.
  • Three weeks of a residential living experience at University of Minnesota residence halls
  • Six weeks UB "Bridge" for graduated high school participants, starting college in the fall
  • Leadership and cultural capital skill building activities
  • Multi-day annual regional college tour for rising seniors

Pay Range: Pay Range: The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $70,000 annually. Final salary offers are dependent on the candidate's experience, skills, and internal equity within the department.
