Job Description

Primary Purpose

The General Supervisor - Pier Operation role is crucial in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of pier activities. This position is responsible for overseeing daily operations, maintaining high safety standards, and driving productivity and growth within the team.

Principal Duties

Safety:

o Conduct pre-shift safety meetings to a high standard, leading by example and coaching others.

o Start on time, come prepared, and stay efficient and focused.

o Encourage team involvement and participation, delegating authority to enhance ownership.

o Communicate the NS strategic plan and discuss relevant safety, reliability, and resiliency metrics.

o Ensure the team absorbs the material and incorporate confidence checks.

o Manage personalities, attitudes, and atmosphere effectively.

o Oversee location training and Comply365 compliance.

o Maintain facility shop conditions to the highest standard and monitor SolutioNS for timely follow-up.

o Plan, schedule, and execute RP-1 requirements in a quality manner.

o Coach teams to deliver effective feedback following rule checks or safety engagements, addressing non-compliance and escalating consequences when necessary.

o Spend at least 60% of the shift where the work is performed, addressing conditions and issues on the spot through coaching or other remedial actions.

Service:

o Oversee daily production regarding shop production and locomotive dispatch.

o Maintain productivity by overseeing coal pier operations and equipment safely and efficiently.

o Oversee pier shift planning and daily execution, addressing location shortfalls.

o Oversee material and tooling allocation processes and set clear standards for compliance.

o Oversee monthly inventory cycle counting and reconciliations.

o Oversee shop equipment, vehicles, and tools to support resiliency and address location shortfalls.

o Participate in shift turnovers, clearly communicating pier plan adjustments, new location processes, and training opportunities with the team.

o Orchestrate training events by location to support operational improvement opportunities.

o Routinely audit pier inspections with exception levels like managers at other levels of the organization.

o Actively participate in root cause analysis of process failures.

o Maintain knowledge of department processes, follow them, and hold to the standard.

o Develop training initiatives to improve pier reliability index and reduce mechanical failure rates.

o Employ process improvement principles to enhance operational efficiency.

o Utilize data analysis to identify focus areas and drive improvements.

o Leverage a strong maintenance and organization background to ensure optimal pier operations.

Skills

Job Related Experience:

5-7 years of mechanical maintenance experience with knowledge of OSHA regulations.

Education:

Preferred Level: Bachelor's degree (BS) in logistics or process improvement field.

Mechanical certifications in maintenance and/or repairs.

Licenses/Certifications:
