Essential Job Duties |
The Research Assistant will support immunological, microbiological, pharmacological, and clinically applied research involving cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and camelids. The primary focus of Dr. Gamsjager's lab is pre-weaning calf health, with an emphasis on:
- Passive immunity (e.g., colostrum management, maternal and neonatal vaccination strategies).
- Critical care of sick neonates (e.g., blood transfusions in ruminants, diagnostic markers for sepsis, anti-inflammatory therapy, fluid therapy).
This role requires independent planning of trials, including literature review, communication with research staff and producers, and data collection. Responsibilities include handling, sampling, and assessing animals, as well as processing and performing laboratory analysis on collected samples.
Key Responsibilities:
Research Coordination: Plan and execute research trials, conduct literature reviews, and communicate with research staff and producers. Data Collection & Analysis: Handle and sample large animals, record data, and use statistical software for analysis. Laboratory Techniques: Perform and assist with sample processing (e.g., serum separation, ELISA, PCR, DNA/RNA extraction, sequencing preparation). Training is available for unfamiliar techniques. Animal Handling & Care: Safely restrain large and small ruminants, collect blood and fecal samples, perform basic physical examinations, administer drugs, and assist with milking. Project Development: Participate in manuscript writing (as a contributing author) and assist with drafting research grants based on skills and interest. Lab Organization & Training: Maintain lab space, assist in training students, and ensure lab safety compliance.
Work Environment
Research is conducted primarily on-farm under real-life conditions with minimal personnel or in a clinical setting. This role requires adaptability and a hands-on approach in both field and laboratory environments.
Opportunities for professional growth include participation in manuscript writing, research project planning, and grant drafting. If you are interested in contributing to cutting-edge research in large animal health, we encourage you to apply. |
