The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is responsible for supporting the IT needs of UC Irvine faculty, students, and staff. Our mission is to provide information technology leadership, services, and innovative solutions to promote the research, education, and community service goals of the University.

The Telecommunications team is responsible for providing telephone service and support to the UC Irvine campus.


Your Role on the Team

Under the general supervision of the Manager, Telecom Engineers and Field Technicians, the Telecommunications Administrator applies skills as a seasoned, experienced communications professional with a full understanding of industry practices and relevant policies and procedures to provide telephone, voicemail, ACD/call center, automated attendant, and 911 services to UCI Irvine faculty, staff, and students. Resolves a wide range of complex issues. Demonstrates competency in selecting methods and techniques to obtain solutions. Processes telephone related service requests, performs client-side system administration and hardware/software maintenance for the campus Mitel PBX, Microsoft Teams, and cloud-based telephone systems. Supports and coordinates the installs of VOIP, digital, soft, and analog phones. Provides project support, design and consulting solutions and works with third party vendors. Creates/updates required documentation and ensures accurate billing.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $85,400- $115,000 (Annual).

Required:

  • Demonstrated thorough knowledge of professional telecommunications and network concepts necessary to resolve issues using established parameters, creativity and independent judgment, escalating as necessary.
  • Thorough understanding of various telecommunication and network hardware platforms, network related protocols and software including understanding of OSI layer 3 protocols at a basic level and layer 2 protocols at a complex level and related technical standards critical to the operation of interconnected networks.
  • Experience administering and maintaining a Mitel PBX and Microsoft Teams telephone system and services including: VOIP, digital, soft, and analog telephones, voicemail, ACD/call center, automated call attendant, and 911.
  • In-depth experience with telecommunication and network diagnostic and performance management tools and software used to analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve problems with systems and infrastructure. Ability to identify appropriate solutions when responding to incidents and telephone service requests.
  • Thorough and broad knowledge and experience working with telecommunication and network management systems.
  • Ability to gather, organize and analyze data in the completion of a variety of functional assignments, recommend solutions, and prepare computer generated reports.
  • Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated diverse problem-solving skills and follows change management policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate project management skills in meeting deadlines, provide status updates, and assess risk.
  • Maintains a positive attitude while achieving departmental goals. Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, conflict resolution, and customer service skills while working with internal and external customers/vendors.
  • Conceptual understanding of telephone system trunk lines that connect a phone system to the public switched network.
  • Proven skills working with computer systems including proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, email, and other common applications.
  • Working knowledge of IP based networks. Experience installing, administering and maintaining systems and applications on virtual servers.
  • Experience with analog gateways. Ability to configure, troubleshoot, and deploy gateways.

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 3-5 years of experience in telecommunications.

Preferred:

  • Experience with cloud services such as unified communications as a service (UCaaS) and call center as a service (CCaaS), unified messaging and network quality of service.
  • Experience administering a Mitel MX-One PBX telephone system.
  • Experience working in a large campus environment working on a large 10,000-line telephone system.

Special Conditions:

  • Participates in an on-call rotation to respond to incidents outside of normal business hours.
