Location: Advanced Materials Characterization Department, Microscopy and Characterization Suite (MaCS), Idaho National Laboratory

Schedule: 9-80's with every other Friday off

Program Duration: 1 year

Position Overview: Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking a post master's student for a one-year program designed to bridge the gap between education and career readiness. The selected candidate will work as a Research Associate in Focused Ion Beam (FIB) Microscopy, contributing to advanced materials development in support of INL's mission. MaCS provides unique microscopy services to INL, universities, and industry partners.

Responsibilities:

• Operate FIB/SEM instruments to support research and materials development programs.
• Maintain and ensure operational proficiency of microscopy instruments and detectors.
• Analyze and evaluate data from various material experiments.
• Author and contribute to peer-reviewed publications and technical reports.
• Organize and ensure efficient use of instruments.
• Collaborate with scientists and modeling experts to enhance microscopy applications.
• Assess the performance of nuclear fuels and cladding through post-irradiation examinations.
• Establish relationships with universities and develop partnerships.
• Provide guidance to junior scientists, technicians, or post-doctoral staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master's degree in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field.
• Research experience in a relevant field.
• Experience with AutoCAD, Microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Sample Preparation.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in a nuclear field.
• Experience in supply chain and operations management.

Review and Evaluation: Performance and satisfaction will be reviewed at three, six, and nine months. At the nine-month review, potential next steps will be discussed:

• Transition to a full-time role
• Pursue additional education
• Explore other opportunities
• Conclude the assignment

Job Information:

The pay range for this position is $82,152 - $88,987. At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
