Nature of Work: This is work involving the safe and efficient operation of various types of tandem-axle trucks, farm-type tractors, and other sewer-related automotive, construction, and maintenance equipment used to maintain, clean, inspect, and repair/replace the City's sanitary and sanitary combined sewer collection systems infrastructure to protect the environment and public from sewer spills. Work involves performing assigned duties that require manipulative skill for material handling and excavation work. In addition to equipment operation, incumbents are required to perform manual labor. Employees in this classification may act as a lead worker. Job assignments are given in detail or follow established routines and are reviewed by an assigned supervisor.

Education and Experience: The knowledge, skills, and abilities may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and/or experience.

Three (3) years of experience in the operation of automotive vehicles and excavation and/or sewer cleaning equipment of the type assigned to this class.
OR
One (1) year of experience performing utility maintenance work within the Sewer Division of the City of Omaha.
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Special Qualifications: Must possess and maintain a valid Class A commercial driver's license with N endorsement, air brake certification. Must possess and maintain a Second Grade Hoisting and Portable Engineer's Certificate.

Must possess and maintain the following certifications by the end of the probationary period:
*Forklift Operator's certificate
*Confined Space Entry certificate
*Work Zone Traffic Control certificate
*Competent Person Shoring and Trench Safety certificate
*Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) Certification

Must possess and maintain the following licensure within one year of appointment:

*Nebraska Pesticide Applicators License for categories 05S, Sewer Root control, and 07, right-of-way pest control

Pay Range: $23.95 with step increases to $31.84 Hourly

Examination Information: The performance test and its preceding familiarization are scheduled during the week of April 21, 2025. The performance exam will consist of components that will be shared with qualified candidates at a later date. Candidates must pass all testing areas to be placed on the eligibility list.

Veteran Points: To claim five (5) points for veteran's preference, you must submit proof of service (such as a DD-214) that includes the date of induction, date of honorable separation, and Social Security number. (You must have completed more than 180 consecutive days of active duty.) To receive an additional five (5) points credit for disability, you must submit proof of eligibility from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs dated within the last 12 months. This information must be submitted to the Human Resources Department by April 23, 2025.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Knowledge of, and ability to operate, computers and other technology using standard or customized computer or systems software applications appropriate to the assigned tasks.
* Knowledge of general construction, pipe repair, manhole structures, and wastewater collection systems.
* Knowledge of excavation safety.
* Knowledge of confined space entry.
* Knowledge of minor maintenance needed to repair and maintain equipment such as jet nozzles, jet saws, hose and reels, jet trucks and vacuum trucks, and pickup trucks.
* Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operations.
* Knowledge of the geography of the City.
* Skill in the use and maintenance of assigned tools and equipment.
* Skill in operating automotive equipment up to and including a semi-truck and lowboy trailer .
* Skill in operating acoustic technology equipment to provide real-time blockage assessment in gravity sewer lines.
* Skill in operating various types of tandem axle trucks, related construction equipment, and basic hand tools in the performance of assigned duties.
* Ability to fit into a 24in wide manhole structure and climb a ladder to enter and exit structures, and to work in a confined space such as manhole and/or trench.
* Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
* Ability to read and understand street maps and quarter section maps to determine the placement of pavement markings and the location of sewer collection components.
* Ability to perform minor mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
* Ability to learn and operate a computer, laptop, or tablet to retrieve, compile, and enter data into appropriate applications and programs.
* Ability to learn and adapt to advances in computer and electronics device technology and software.
* Ability to maintain effective working relationships with superiors, other city employees, members of the public, and contractors and their agents.
* Ability to learn and adhere to safety policies, procedures, and guidelines.
* Ability to understand sketches and area maps.

Essential Functions: Any one position may not perform all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all of the duties that may be performed in positions allocated to this class. * Provides skilled assistance in the maintenance and monitoring activities of the City's wastewater collection systems.
* Injects dye into the sewer lines to assist with sewer investigations.
* Operates and maintains jetting, jet sawing, and jet vacuuming equipment to clean sewer mains and stormwater systems.
* Maintains and clears grass, shrubs, and trees for accessibility to facilities and equipment.
* Picks up, loads, and removes debris from streets and sidewalks after storms.
* Cleans, maintains, and repairs stormwater outfalls, waterways, sewer inlet grates, manholes, and catch basins using various hand tools.
* Reviews maps and work orders and locates manholes, piping, and other collection system structures to carry out daily assigned tasks.
* Enters data into the mobile device for manhole and sewer line inspection information, and adds updates with notes and any information not on current work order.
* Completes and submits reports of work completed.
* Uses current sewer mapping and magnetic locator to locate and mark sewer manholes and lines in the field.
* Monitors safety of work areas, determines need for traffic control measures, places and retrieves temporary traffic control devices.
* Monitors supplies and inventory for assigned equipment, and initiates requests for required parts, tools, and materials.
* Responds to and resolves citizens' reports, questions, and concerns as directed by a supervisor.
* Operates various types of tandem-axle sewer cleaning equipment and related equipment assigned to this class in the performance of maintenance, construction, and snow removal projects.
* Performs cleanup and routine maintenance of job sites, vehicles, and equipment, including securing tools and equipment for transportation and removing debris and trash.
* Establishes turf by means of trimming, fertilizing, spraying, weeding, and erosion control matting.
* Removes snow from sidewalks and driveways using snow blowers, shovels, and other automotive equipment for job site preparation.
* Repairs and replaces irrigation system pipe and heads by digging up the underground pipe, removing damaged sections, installing new sections, and covering new pipe with dirt and sod.
* Cuts and breaks up concrete or asphalt, loads broken pieces into trucks, cleans areas to be repaired, pours concrete, and performs concrete finish work.
* Repairs city sewer lines by digging trenches less than 5ft deep, shaping rock bedding, cutting pipe, and replacing damaged pipe using couplings.
* Replaces manhole covers and rings, and repairs sewer inlets, manhole bodies, and surrounding surfaces, including breaking up cement or asphalt, loading broken pieces into trucks, cleaning areas to be repaired, and measuring, pouring concrete, and performing finish work.
* Operates easement equipment to gain access to manholes not easily accessible by truck in order to clean and maintain line segments.
* Removes grit from grit pits in the plants, lift stations, and collection systems, and replaces grit and trash removal containers.
* Monitors, cleans, and maintains trash collection screens/pits utilizing a combination vac truck.
* Delivers necessary materials and equipment and loads and hauls dirt, concrete, and other debris to and from job sites.
* Forms and sets grades for concrete flatwork and structure replacement, and pours and finishes concrete for inlet boxes, inlet aprons, and manhole aprons.
* Maintains snow, debris, tree dumps, and grinding piles, and keeps material segregated while keeping dump sites safe and orderly.
* Maintains regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established for the position by the supervisor.
* Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification.
