Summary:

The Microbiologist I will be responsible for conducting laboratory research and analysis to support the mission of the Division of Viral Diseases (DVD) in preventing disease, disability, and death from viral diseases through immunization and other prevention measures. This role involves performing microbiological tests, analyzing data, and contributing to scientific research and public health initiatives.

This position is located Atlanta, GA with partial remote work.

Essential Job Functions:

• Perform microbiological tests and analyses on viral samples to identify and characterize microorganisms.
• Analyze and interpret data from laboratory experiments to support research findings and public health recommendations.
• Collect, process, and examine viral samples following established protocols.
• Record and document findings in detailed reports and present results to colleagues, stakeholders, and at scientific conferences.
• Ensure accuracy and reliability of laboratory results by supervising biological technicians and maintaining laboratory equipment.
• Collaborate with domestic and international partners on viral disease outbreak investigations and surveillance activities.
• Provide scientific leadership and consultation for evidence-based decision-making on the use of viral vaccines and other prevention measures.

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, microbiology and/or virology with 2+ years of experience OR Masters degree in biology, molecular biology, microbiology and/or virology.
• Previous experience with preparation of samples for molecular biology procedures (nucleic acid extraction, PCR) and/or next-generation sequencing.
• Ability to pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Relevant certifications (e.g., ASCP, AMT) are a plus.
