THE POSITION

Are you familiar with working with horses? Would you like to apply that knowledge in the thrilling environment of horse racing? The Department of Agriculture is on the lookout for individuals to fill Livestock Worker roles, where you will support Veterinarians in managing horses and documenting essential data at Harrah's Racetrack. As a Livestock Worker, you will play a crucial role in upholding the standards, regulations, and policies set forth by the Pennsylvania State Horse Racing Commission.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The Livestock Worker 1 role entails a variety of responsibilities centered around the care and monitoring of designated horses. This includes overseeing the horses assigned to them, accurately documenting the administration of lasix by the veterinarian, and ensuring that all records are maintained and delivered as required. Additionally, the worker is tasked with escorting horses from the track exit to the Detention area, retrieving sample collection kits from the State Veterinarian's office, and confirming the sample numbers on urine cups along with the security barcode strips. Identification of each horse is crucial, which involves reading and verifying their tattoo numbers or microchips. The worker must closely monitor the activities of the assigned horses until the handler enters the stall, at which point they will collect urine samples. It is essential to notify the State Veterinarian once the urine has been collected and to assist in the process of bleeding the horse. Throughout this process, the horse must remain under constant observation by the Farm Worker. After collecting the urine sample, it should be returned to the lab area, where it will be split and wrapped according to established protocols. The worker is also responsible for ensuring that handlers sign necessary paperwork, placing samples in the correct containers, and signing off on the appropriate documentation. Maintaining a clean work area and upholding the confidentiality of test barn information are also critical aspects of the role, along with any additional tasks assigned by the supervisor.
