What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a skilled R&D Nuclear Engineer to join our dynamic team, who is passionate about solving significant issues for our nation's security. In this role, you will utilize state-of-the-art concepts and technologies to explore innovative solutions to difficult challenges.

On any given day, you may be called upon to:

• Perform gamma/neutron radiation transport studies to model the response of various radiation detection systems.

• Design, build, assemble, and test novel sensor systems, including radiation detector systems, using Sandia-developed detection algorithms.

• Conduct test and measurement experiments to characterize sensor performance and support all areas of radiation detector system development, including detector response, signal processing, algorithm development, mechanical design, and operational procedures.

• Develop tools to analyze the results from radiation transport studies and program algorithms and supporting software for radiation detection systems.

• Develop data analysis tools in Python, MATLAB, ROOT, or similar languages, and create data acquisition systems for tailored applications.

• Write technical reports summarizing R&D efforts and conceive of and contribute to R&D proposals for new work.

• Lead and collaborate on projects at low, mid, and high Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs).

  Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$99,400 - $193,600

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

• Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering or a related field plus one (1) year of relevant experience; or a Bachelor's degree with a minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience.

• Experienced in the following:

• Radiation detection techniques and sensors, including experience using or designing radiation detection systems (gamma or neutron).

• Radiation transport calculations and Monte Carlo N Particle (MCNP) transport software.

• Algorithm development and programming, with proficiency in Python and/or MATLAB.

• Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

• PhD in Nuclear Engineering or a related field.

• Experience in:

• Conducting radiation detection measurement experiments.

• Radiation modeling and simulation tools such as GEANT4 or GADRAS.

• C, C++, or Java.

• Writing proposals and leading project teams.

• Demonstrated ability to post-process and work with large sets of data, as well as produce technical documents.

• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative and interdisciplinary team environment.

• Knowledge of signal processing techniques, particularly those related to radiation sensors.

• Familiarity with machine learning techniques and standard methodologies.

• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

• Understanding of nuclear nonproliferation, arms control, and safeguards topics.

• Active DOE Q-level or DOD equivalent.

About Our Team:

The Nuclear Verification Department (6818) is making the world a safer place by helping the US Government to reduce nuclear threats. We give policymakers technical options for verifying declared nuclear warheads and materials to enable effective arms control treaties and agreements. We research, develop, evaluate, and field new technologies that increase our government's capability to verify treaties and manage nuclear materials. Our diverse work includes technical development of radiation detectors, information barriers, sensors, tags, seals, information management and protection, and other nuclear security technologies, often with ultra-low-power requirements. Our programs are performed collaboratively with scientists and engineers in the Global Security & Cooperation Center (6800), across Sandia, with other national laboratories and sites, and internationally.
