Pay Range $193,020- $293,760 Annually

$193,020 - $244,752 Annually for the TSL.4 level

$231,660 - $293,760 Annually for the TSL.5 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. Job Description

We're looking for a Senior Industrial Hygiene/Safety Program Leadto provide highly advanced technical expertise and leadership for a group of field disciplines and subject-matter experts in Industrial Hygiene or Industrial Safety and enable program compliance with applicable requirements while supporting work activities at LLNL. You'll join the Worker Safety and Health Functional Area (WSHFA) within the Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) Directorate.

This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which includes the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week, after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid schedule, including the exact number of days required in the office and virtual work options, may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization.

You will

  • Partner with the Worker Safety and Health Functional Area Manager (WSH FAM) on daily operations and leadership; serve as acting WSH FAM when required.
  • Lead and provide technical expertise to Industrial Hygiene/Industrial Safety (IH/IS) subject matter experts to ensure high-quality, unified services using innovative best practices.
  • Supervise IH/IS field staff, including performance reviews, salary management, recruitment, and professional development to ensure staff maintain expert-level qualifications.
  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert on industrial hygiene and occupational safety standards; develop and implement technically sound policies that align with regulations and are applied consistently across the Laboratory. Serve as the Industrial Hygiene Exposure Assessment Leader (IHEAL) overseeing IH exposure assessment strategy.
  • Provide highly advanced technical expertise and leadership to ES&H management and LLNL programs on regulatory issues, their potential impact and mitigation. Support mission organizations and programs by providing deployed staff.
  • Represent the LLNL to internal/external stakeholders, including the governance boards and oversight committees.
  • Develop performance objectives intended to strengthen the institutional Industrial Hygiene or Industrial Safety Program, moving it toward excellence, in collaboration with Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) colleagues and ES&H Team management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at theTSL.5 level:

  • Provide enterprise level vision and leadership for Industrial Hygiene and Safety programs. Mentor senior staff and contribute to long term workforce planning.
  • Lead high impact initiatives that shape institutional strategy and cross functional collaboration.
  • Represent LLNL at national forums, external oversight bodies, and DOE advisory groups. Collaborate with DOE staff and colleagues from other sites to anticipate and address regulatory challenges effectively.

Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Minimum of Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety or other scientific, technical or safety-related field.
  • Professional certification in a safety discipline (e.g., Certified Industrial Hygienist or Certified Safety Professional).
  • Subject matter expert level knowledge in one or more industrial hygiene or occupational safety disciplines.
  • Extensive experience with and expert knowledge and understanding of worker safety and health standards and regulations, working knowledge of DOE requirements, including 10 CFR 850 or 851, and other national standards and regulations.
  • 10+ years of progressive highly advanced experience in industrial hygiene and safety experience ensuring ES&H and quality assurance standards are established and met.
  • Experience in the areas of performance and salary management, as well as motivating, leading, supervising, mentoring and hiring a team of professionals supporting a complex, diverse organization.
  • Expert verbal and written communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively lead, present, explain, and advise highly complex technical information to all levels of management, including regulatory agencies and key stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated expertise in organizational strategy, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and data-driven decision-making. Proven ability to lead and implement effective solutions to highly complex issues with minimal supervision. Must excel in managing multiple high-priority tasks in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with competing deadlines and frequent interruptions, all while maintaining exceptional customer service and professionalism.

Additional qualifications at the TSL.5 Level:

  • 15+ years of progressive highly complex experience in industrial hygiene and safety experience ensuring ES&H and quality assurance standards are established and met.
  • Proven supervisory experience with performance management responsibilities. Strong leadership in performance and salary management, engaging stakeholders at all levels, and fostering a proactive, prevention-focused safety culture aligned with organizational mission and regulatory requirements.
  • Senior-level subject matter expertise in industrial hygiene and occupational health, with authoritative knowledge of federal and state regulations, including mastery of DOE requirements such as 10 CFR 850 and 10 CFR 851, as well as national standards (ACGIH, OSHA, NIOSH, ANSI, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead the development, execution, and continuous improvement of enterprise-level industrial hygiene programs within high-hazard, complex environments. Proven success in shaping institutional strategy, influencing policy at the executive level, and driving compliance through evidence-based risk assessment and exposure mitigation, including factors that may not be well defined.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Familiarity with LLNL and/or DOE/ NNSA policies and procedures.
  • Master's degree or PhD in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety or other scientific, technical or safety-related field.
