Communications Specialist

The Communications Specialist works as a core member of the Corporate Communications team at Worthington Enterprises. This person supports internal and external communications with integrated strategies and tactics that align with the organization's goals and objectives and reflect the Company's forward-thinking and market-leading position. The role reports to the director of corporate communications.

This position is based out of our corporate headquarters in Columbus, OH and is a hybrid role spending 4 days/week on-site with flexibility to adjust schedules as needed to meet business needs.

Key Duties & Responsibilities



  • Collaborates with other members of the Corporate Communications team to implement integrated campaigns supporting various strategic initiatives such as recruiting, learning and development, health and wellness, safety and sustainability, among others.
  • Manages Worthington Enterprises social media channels (LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram) by developing content, monitoring engagement, reporting results and recommending creative approaches to increase followers and activity.
  • Ideates and develops content reflective of the Company's optimistic, ambitious, insightful and empowered tone; thinks and works with an integrated mindset to help ensure the right content appears in the appropriate forms to the right audience(s).
  • Maintains an integrated content calendar to ensure timely and consistent messaging across all channels (both internally and externally).
  • Supports organization and operations of town hall and employee meetings and other internal events.
  • Helps maintain external Company website as well as intranet site; brings forward recommendations for increasing user engagement on both platforms.
  • Capable of making minor design edits and working closely with in-house designer to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Brings unsolicited ideas that are actionable, relevant and impactful for Worthington Enterprises.
  • Serves as one of the primary stewards of the Company's brand; acts as brand advocate and caretaker through ongoing updates and refinements.
  • Thrives on the opportunities to think differently, take informed and strategic risks, develop new ideas and achieve more.
  • Embraces Our Philosophy and reflects an understanding of the role of a small corporate and support staff to support the needs of our shareholders and business segments.
  • Assists with distribution of Company news on the wire and/or publishing on the website, as needed.
  • Monitors daily Communications email inbox and distributes requests to appropriate contacts within the Company.
  • Tracks, monitors and reports on Worthington Enterprises mentions in traditional and social media on an ongoing basis and for crises.


Required Skills



  • Expertise working with Microsoft applications (PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams) and Canva.
  • Desire to understand Worthington Enterprises and its business segments as well as the needs of internal clients and/or the emotions of their target audiences to ensure content is user-centered and impactful.
  • Collaborative mindset focused on achieving the best outcome for the Company.
  • Flexibility in working with numerous stakeholders throughout the organization.
  • Maturity to manage a schedule that will include unplanned requests with short timelines.
  • Detail-oriented mindset that ensures deadlines are met, materials reflect requested edits and content meets spelling, punctuation and AP style expectations.
  • Curiosity to learn new approaches and technologies, including artificial intelligence.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, which are essential for achieving alignment with stakeholders and cross-functional teams.
  • Respectfully articulates ideas clearly and provides rationale for recommendations.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret and use data to drive decision-making.


Desired Qualifications



  • Experience in a similar communications and/or marketing role.
  • Exceptional writing, editing and proofreading skills; strong knowledge of AP Style guidelines.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Interest in internal and external communications, digital asset management, brand development and creative process.
  • Design skills desired but not required.
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing or a related field.
