The Corporate Director of Safety, Health and Environment (SH&E) will manage our corporate SH&E team and serve as the overall safety leader for HDR. - Lead SH&E department in effective management and implementation of Corporate Health, Safety and Environmental program.
- Work with senior leadership to advise, support and implement any/all changes or updates regarding Corporate SH&E requirements.
- Ensure that all Corporate SH&E policies and procedures meet and/or exceed all regulatory requirements and "best management" practices in support of HDR's "Zero Incident" philosophy and goals.
- Promote a culture of safety by effectively developing and implementing a Corporate SH&E training program that supports all levels of employees in the course of performing their job functions in a safe and effective manner.
- Develop and implement department Key Performance Indicators annually that provide effective SH&E goals and objectives to support "world class" safety performance.
- Provide overall strategic leadership for HDR's SH&E Program.
- Partner with executives and business leaders at all levels to promote a positive safety culture and provide support for the work we do both in the office and in the field.
- Implement SH&E strategies and initiatives in a way that reflects our values, protects our employees, and encourages compliance.
- Lead a team of corporate direct reports and provide indirect leadership to safety managers across the organization.
- Prepare and monitor Corporate SH&E budget.
- Provide leadership as well as technical and administrative direction on all safety and health policies, procedures, initiatives and programs.
- Oversee compliance with regulations, consensus standards, as well as HDR and client requirements in all of HDR's areas of operation.
- In conjunction with corporate, operations and business group partners, design and execute education, training and awareness programs required to support our business and continuously improve KPIs.
- Regularly review internal SH&E programs, procedures, and policies to ensure they are current and appropriate.
- Provide risk-management reviews, interpretation and internal consultation for client contract/RFP requirements regarding safety-related services.
- Partner with our Director of Security to support that group's management of our travel security program and our emergency, incident and crisis management programs.
- Support Human Resources in the daily management of our Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.
- Support HDR marketing pursuits by tracking and providing required safety information and working with third party reviewers (e.g. ISNetworld, PEC Safety).
- Analyze incident trends/data and recommend corrective actions to appropriate management.
- Work to reduce accidents and workers compensation claims and implement appropriate return to work, work transfer, and fit for duty programs.
- Manage accident investigation and reporting program to help prevent recurrence of incidents and disseminate corrective actions to appropriate staff.
- Conduct SH&E compliance audits/scorecard evaluations for all locations to evaluate if company and regulatory requirements are being met and report findings to executive management and business leaders.
- Direct and/or provide H&S services on client projects as requested.
- Attend relevant industry conferences and professional meetings to maintain professional competencies and benchmark company performance. Identify relevant innovations and best practices and adapt them to HDR.
- Display strong leadership skills and the ability to work in a collaborative matrix organization where interactions are based on professional consultation and partnering in the best interest of the organization.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in industrial hygiene, occupational safety and health, safety engineering, safety management, engineering or a related scientific discipline.
- Prior experience in developing, implementing and managing SH&E processes and programs in locations outside the US.
- 5+ years demonstrated field construction safety management experience.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, occupational safety and health, safety engineering, safety management, engineering or a related scientific discipline. Master's degree preferred.
- Certification in one or more SH&E fields such as (Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), Safety Trained Supervisor (STS) or equivalent.
- 15+ years of progressive experience in safety management.
- Ability to drive change through all levels of the organization.
- Thorough knowledge of OSHA regulations and ANSI consensus standards; knowledge of FRA, DOT, NRC and EPA regulations helpful.
- Strong verbal, written, and analytical skills as well as the ability to interact effectively with executives, business managers, local leaders, clients and SH&E team.
- Ability to travel up to 40 percent of time on average, and as needed (likely less than 10 percent outside of the US).
- Knowledge of safety management systems including Behavior-Based Safety (BBS).
- Valid driver's license.
- Knowledge and application of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint software.
- Team-oriented servant leader with proven oral and written skills to support a healthy company safety culture and SH&E policy and procedure requirements.
- Experienced and proven leadership skills necessary to effectively manage a department in support of company SH&E requirements.
- Development and management of large SH&E programs in a construction or A&E work environment.
- SH&E management experience in federal/state government programs/projects. Ability to obtain a government security clearance (Secret/Top Secret).
- Affiliations with professional organizations such as NSC, ASSE, AIHA. Understanding of ISO standards as they relate to SH&E.
- Experience in development or leading of safety training for office or construction work environments.
