CAIS offers a wide range of analytical services including: 14C analyses by AMS; D, 13C, 15N, 18O, and 34S by EA- IRMS, Total CHN, Compound-specific GC- IRMS analyses, Elemental Analysis by ICP- OES and ICP-MS, Ion Chromatography, 14C analysis by LSC, Isotope Analyses by MC- ICP-MS, and Scientific Glass Blowing.

Position Summary
The Lab Manager & Assistant Quality Manager will oversee the daily workflow within the Plasma Chemistry Lab at the Center for Applied Isotope Studies, including supervising students. Participates in collaborative research in geology, archaeology, earth and environmental sciences, including development and refinement of methodologies and protocols. Operates and maintains equipment for elemental analysis, including inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometers ( ICP-MS), optical emission spectroscopy ( OES), and direct mercury analysis ( DMA). Additionally, the position oversees the Natural Products Lab's ISO/ IEC accreditation process and ensures adherence and revisions to the CAIS Quality Manual.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • 2 years of direct experience operating ICP-OES and ICP-MS equipment
  • 2 years of experience in wet chemical analysis, with emphasis on acid digestion and minimizing contamination
  • Ability to effectively communicate theoretical concepts and technical procedures to faculty, students, and staff
  • 2 years of direct experience preparing samples for natural products and biobased testing
  • 1 year of direct experience performing internal audits for ISO/IEC accreditation for natural products and biobased testing

Plasma Chemistry Sample preparation and coordination: Oversee and delegate logging, weighing, and preparation of samples for major and trace metals analysis in the Plasma Chemistry Lab. Maintain laboratory records, ensuring proper chain-of-custody for all samples received. Manage sample throughput to meet client deadlines and expectations regarding turnaround time. Ensure proper coordination of samples between the Plasma Chemistry Lab and other CAIS labs

Plasma Chemistry Instrument Operation & Maintenance: Operate and maintain laboratory equipment for major and trace metals analysis ( ICP-MS, ICP- OES, and DMA) in the Plasma Chemistry Lab. Monitor system performance, ensuring consistent accuracy and precision of results. Assist with data reduction and reporting. Keep detailed records of instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and performance checks.

Plasma Chemistry Procedures & Training: Write, update, and revise standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the Plasma Chemistry Lab. Provide training to technicians, students, and other lab personnel on proper laboratory procedures and equipment operation. Maintain laboratory safety.
