The Surgical Technician is a clinician who provides intra-operative technical assistance to physicians and Registered Nurses (RN) who care for patients experiencing a surgical intervention or other invasive procedure.

Qualifications
- Education: Associate's Degree in Surgical Technology
- Equivalency: Graduate of a military training program or diploma degree in surgical technology with completed clinical rotations may be considered in lieu of a diploma degree.
- Certification(s): American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers at time of hire.
- Licensure(s): State of Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) Surgical Technologist or Surgical Assistant Registration
Responsibilities
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.
1. Assists with room turnovers and set-ups; restocks and orders supplies; utilizes downtime effectively; and participates in department quality improvement activities.
2. Promotes patient safety by participating in the surgical time out; labeling medications on the field; verifying patient weight and allergies with RN prior to passing medications to physician; communication of hand-off of care when relieved during case; and selection of appropriate instruments and supplies based on patient size and procedure.
3. Assists with patient positioning and properly identifies specimens.
4. Monitors potential hazards for sharp or burn injury.
5. Safely handles bio-hazardous materials and uses standard precautions and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
6. Utilizes preference cards to prepare for surgical procedure; scrubs all cases as assigned; anticipates needs of case by opening correct supplies and instruments; is attentive to flow of the surgery so that surgeons' needs are anticipated.
