Department Summary

NTERI endeavors to comprehensively advance research, education, and clinical care aimed at understanding the visual system, as well as preventing, treating, and finding cures for eye disorders. NTERI is firmly committed to assuming a leadership role in the scientific community and is dedicated to addressing and eliminating healthcare disparities based on race and ethnicity. Furthermore, our institute prioritizes the development of impactful interventions to combat eye diseases and disorders.

Position Overview

The Director of the North Texas Eye Research Institute (NTERI) reports directly to the Executive Director and holds a senior leadership position. The Director works collaborative with the Executive and Associate Directors and provides comprehensive guidance and strategic oversight to advance the institute's mission. This role involves leading NTERI in conducting cutting-edge research in eye and vision science, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers, securing diverse funding sources-including grants, partnerships, and donations-and effectively translating scientific discoveries into practical applications that improve eye health and vision care.

Minimum Qualifications

PhD degree and five (5) years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

* Exceptional strategic planning, leadership, and organizational skills.
* Strong interpersonal and communication abilities, including the capacity to build consensus and inspire diverse stakeholders.
* Deep knowledge of vision science research, clinical trends, and regulatory considerations.
* Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in all aspects of leadership and research practice.

Preferred Qualifications

Education
- Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant scientific discipline degree

Experience
- Demonstrated record of excellence in vision-related research and scholarly activity.
- Proven leadership in academic or research institutions, with experience directing complex programs and interdisciplinary teams.
- Track record of successful grant acquisition, fiscal management, and stakeholder engagement.

Job Duties:



  • Strategic Leadership: - Develop and execute a dynamic, multi-year strategic plan aligned with NTERI's mission and institutional priorities. - Identify emerging trends and opportunities in vision science, guiding the institute to the forefront of eye research innovation. - Serve as the primary ambassador for NTERI, building and nurturing relationships with academic partners, government agencies, philanthropic organizations, industry stakeholders, and the broader community.
  • Research Program Development & Oversight - Oversee a portfolio of basic, translational, and clinical research initiatives that address significant challenges in eye and vision health. - Foster a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment that bridges faculty, trainees, clinicians, and community partners. - Ensure scientific excellence and research integrity through program evaluation, mentorship, and peer engagement.
  • Financial and Operational Stewardship - Lead the institute's financial planning, resource allocation, and budget management to ensure long-term sustainability and impact. - Actively pursue external funding, including federal and foundation grants, philanthropic gifts, and industry partnerships. - Ensure transparency and accountability in financial operations, reporting, and compliance with institutional and sponsor policies.
  • Team and Talent Management - Recruit, inspire, and retain a diverse team of faculty, research scientists, trainees, and administrative professionals. - Promote a culture of inclusion, continuous learning, and professional development. - Empower staff through clear communication, collaborative leadership, and recognition of individual and team achievements.
  • Public Engagement and Advocacy - Elevate public understanding of eye health and the institute's research impact through strategic communications and outreach. - Lead the development of community-based programs, educational events, and stakeholder engagement initiatives. - Cultivate partnerships with healthcare providers, nonprofit organizations, and advocacy groups to promote shared goals in vision health and equity.
