Position Summary:
The Data Scientist plays a key role in supporting the
institution's strategic decision-making through actionable insights delivered
using data science techniques. The position plays a critical role in implementing
analytics initiatives to drive institutional outcomes. The ideal candidate will
have a strong background in data science and machine learning, with a passion
for driving innovation that supports student success and institutional
excellence. In addition, the ideal candidate will have strong soft skills, such
as communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
Essential Functions:
Support strategic
decision-making:
-Implements predictive models and algorithms to support decision-making related to admissions, enrollment, academic performance, student retention and graduation, operational efficiency, and strategic planning.
-Collaborates with the Senior Data Scientist and AI Engineer on innovative research projects within the university's Analytics and Data Governance division to provide actionable insights that promote excellence in both academic and operational domains.
Analyze large and
complex datasets:
-Collects, cleans, preprocess, and transforms large volumes of structured and unstructured data from various sources to ensure its quality and suitability for machine learning and AI tasks.
-Uses advanced statistical techniques to build data-driven models to answer business questions.
-Supports the creation of predictive models to forecast future trends, behaviors, or outcomes based on historical data.
-Supports collaborative efforts with colleagues across the university to identify, standardize, and collect other data sources for use in future analyses.
-Collaborates with the Business Intelligence team to maintain the data ecosystem to support current and future analytics projects.

-Assists in mentoring graduate students in appropriate ML and AI projects.
-Works in multidisciplinary teams to implement analytics projects to support data-driven insights.
-Effectively communicates complex technical concepts and analytical findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Research and
innovation:
-Stays up-to-date on the latest advancements in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to assist in identifying opportunities to enhance decision-making and improve operational efficiency.
-Stays informed about innovative approaches and methodologies to improve data analysis techniques and decision-making processes within the higher education landscape.
-Collaborates with cross-functional teams to identify new opportunities for data-driven interventions and initiatives.
-Assists in the evaluation of new tools and techniques to increase the capabilities and capacity of the Analytics and Data Governance team.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
-A master's degree or higher, or equivalent experience, in data analytics, data science, computer science, statistics, or a related field.
-2-4 years of experience in: Statistical analysis, machine learning techniques, and predictive modeling; Working withlarge datasets and performing data cleaning, transformation, and manipulation; Working in data visualization tools, such as [Micro] Strategy.
-Fluency in multiple programming languages and statistical analysis tools such as Python and SQL, and familiarity with popular machine learning and AI frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch.
-Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Snowflake and their relevant services including Streamlit.
-Familiarity with AI, its potential roles in solving business problems, and the future trajectory of AI models.
-Experience with version control systems like Git for collaborative development and code management.
-Strong communication & collaboration skills, which includes presentation skills, communicating complex projects, models and results to a diverse audience.

Salary Information:
In compliance with the NJ Pay Transparency Law, the negotiated annual salary range for this position is $72,048.00-$135,072.00 (USD). NJIT considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses or other items.
