THE POSITION

The Department of Transportation is currently looking to hire a Tradesman Helper to join their team. In this essential role, the successful candidate will provide support to skilled tradesmen by assisting with the repair and preventive maintenance of a diverse fleet of construction equipment and hand tools. The position involves performing semi-skilled trades work, which includes aiding skilled tradesmen in various tasks related to equipment upkeep, building and grounds maintenance, construction projects, and other related trades activities. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will be responsible for independently conducting preventive maintenance and executing minor repairs, which include tasks such as replacing hoses, wires, light bulbs, lenses, and filters, as well as performing oil changes, lubrication, and mounting or repairing tires. You will also need to accurately document parts used and time spent on each task. Additionally, you will operate a non-commercial vehicle to facilitate the delivery and collection of parts, mail, and other related items, ensuring compliance with departmental purchasing policies. It is essential to report any observed equipment damage immediately. Your role will also involve routine identification of equipment issues using diagnostic tools and following established testing procedures, as well as assisting in troubleshooting efforts. Furthermore, you will carry out minor repairs and maintenance on motorized hand tools, including chain saws, compressors, jackhammers, tampers, hand mowers, trimmers, routers, patching machines, and heating kettles, while promptly reporting any missing or damaged equipment as it is discovered.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Travel, overtime and shift work required. Work hours subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $35,306 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Special Requirement:

  • This position requires an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C driver's license or equivalent.
