Job Title: Ontology Integration Specialist

Job Overview: The Ontology Integration Specialist provides expert-level analysis, content development, and editorial oversight in support of biomedical research informatics and knowledge management initiatives. This role involves working with highly specialized terminology and data standards to support the modeling, integration, and dissemination of scientific concepts across research domains. The specialist works collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to align ontologies, terminologies, and data representations with evolving scientific understanding, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and semantic interoperability.

Key Responsibilities

Subject Matter Expertise & Editorial Contributions


  • Provide expert content analysis and domain-driven insights in molecular biology, genetics, genomics, proteomics, comparative biology, and related fields.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on terminology modeling, semantic relationships, and knowledge representation.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of biomedical terminologies, ontologies, and controlled vocabularies.
  • Review and validate content for accuracy, consistency, and alignment with scientific best practices and standards.
  • Support curation and editorial workflows to ensure quality and timeliness of information updates.

Documentation & Communication


  • Design and prepare technical reports, white papers, and structured documentation supporting project findings, data models, and ontological structures.
  • Develop and deliver executive-level briefings using visuals such as charts, graphs, and diagrams to communicate findings and recommendations to stakeholders and client managers.
  • Participate in stakeholder discussions, scientific panels, and strategic planning meetings to represent scientific content needs

Project Involvement and Integration Support


  • Collaborate with informaticians, data scientists, terminologists, and software engineers on the development and implementation of biomedical information systems.
  • Provide leadership or support on projects involving content integration, terminology standardization, and ontology development.
  • Assist in defining relationships between content areas, particularly in cross-disciplinary contexts such as translational research or epidemiology.

Qualifications


  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in a biomedical, scientific, or research-oriented role.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform advanced analysis and contribute to complex content development initiatives.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly for technical and executive-level audiences.
  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D., Sc.D., etc.) in molecular biology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, or a related biomedical science.
  • Post-doctoral research experience in a relevant domain is strongly preferred.
  • Cross-disciplinary expertise or familiarity with translational research, comparative biology, or experimental design is a plus.
  • Experience in terminology creation, ontology modeling, or scientific knowledge representation.
  • Familiarity with controlled vocabularies and standards (e.g., GO, NCIt, MeSH, UMLS, OBO Foundry ontologies).
  • Working knowledge of OWL, RDF, Protege, or similar semantic technologies.
  • Detail-oriented and precise in reviewing scientific content.
  • Comfortable navigating complex interdisciplinary scientific domains.
  • Able to synthesize and communicate complex findings to diverse audiences.
  • Proactive and collaborative, with a commitment to advancing biomedical informatics.
  • Preferred Subject Areas:


  • Content expertise and editorial efforts are particularly desirable in one or more of the following:
  • Anatomy (including microanatomy and comparative anatomy)
  • Genes, proteins, molecular pathways
  • Experimental organism models
  • Molecular and other biomarkers
  • Diseases and biological findings
  • Biomedical study design and research reporting

Compensation and Benefits

The projected compensation range for this position is $90,000 to $130,00 per year benchmarked in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Salary at LCG is determined by various factors, including but not limited to role, location, the combination of education/training, knowledge, skills, competencies, certifications, and work experience.
