Job Title: Biomedical Terminology Specialist

Job Overview: The Biomedical Terminology Specialist provides expert-level support in biomedical content development, clinical terminology modeling, and scientific documentation to support federal research and public health programs. This role involves working closely with interdisciplinary teams to analyze, structure, and standardize complex biomedical concepts and terminology for integration into national vocabularies, ontologies, and informatics systems. The ideal candidate brings domain expertise in biomedical or clinical fields and experience with terminology standards, content modeling, and semantic technologies.

Key Responsibilities

Subject Matter Expertise



  • Serve as a subject matter expert in areas such as pharmacology, medicine, public health, biology, molecular biology, or related domains.
  • Provide high-level domain-specific input into terminology creation, classification, and ontology modeling efforts.
  • Analyze, structure, and validate complex biomedical content to ensure accurate representation in controlled vocabularies and semantic models.
  • Contribute to efforts involving public health data standards, clinical research content harmonization, and biomedical informatics alignment.


Editorial and Content Development



  • Design and maintain editorial standards for terminology development across key biomedical domains such as:

    • Drugs, agents, reagents, carcinogens
    • Clinical procedures, diagnostics, treatments, prevention, and imaging
    • Diseases, clinical findings, abnormalities, and molecular pathology
    • Genomics, biomarkers, population health, and demographics


  • Model new terminology content using appropriate formats (e.g., OWL, RDFS) based on biomedical data standards.
  • Review and curate terminology entries for accuracy, completeness, and semantic consistency.


Communication and Documentation



  • Prepare technical reports, documentation, and white papers to summarize study findings, terminology decisions, and editorial changes.
  • Develop executive-level briefings with visuals such as charts, graphs, and summaries tailored to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Participate in project planning meetings, presenting findings and recommendations as needed.


Qualifications



  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in biomedical, clinical, or public health research or related field.
  • Advanced degree (MS, PhD, MD, PharmD, or advanced degree in nursing) in Nursing, Pharmacology, Public Health, Medicine, Biology, Molecular Biology, or a related field is required.
  • Familiarity with national or international clinical vocabularies such as SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm, NCI Thesaurus (NCIt), or UMLS.
  • Knowledge of ontology development environments (e.g., Protege) and semantic web technologies (e.g., OWL, RDF).
  • Experience working with or contributing to biomedical informatics systems or research data repositories.
  • Strong background in terminology development, semantic modeling, or ontology work within biomedical or healthcare environments.
  • Experience creating or maintaining clinical vocabularies or working with biomedical data standards
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and scientific writing skills.
  • Collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Detail-oriented with a passion for data quality, accuracy, and standardization.
  • Ability to communicate complex biomedical topics to both technical and non-technical audiences.


Compensation and Benefits

The projected compensation range for this position is $90,000 to $130,000 per year benchmarked in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Salary at LCG is determined by various factors, including but not limited to role, location, the combination of education/training, knowledge, skills, competencies, certifications, and work experience.
