About the Job

The Continental Scientific Drilling (CSD) Facility provides infrastructure for scientists utilizing core samples from Earth's continents in their research, through integrated
support for coring and drilling projects, from project inception through curation. Funded by NSF and the University of Minnesota.

30%: Routine core sampling and description- Perform initial core description, including core splitting, logging, cleaning, imaging, lithological description, smear slides and sampling cores.
40%: Archiving cores- Rack and inventory cores in cold and dry storage locations, including the use of forklift and mobile elevated work platform.
15%: Analytical sample preparation- Perform routine laboratory tasks following developed procedures. Prepare standard solutions and reagents. Operate routine laboratory equipment such as balances, centrifuges and freeze dryer.

Qualifications

Required qualifications:
High school graduate/GED with some courses in Geology or related discipline and experience in a laboratory setting, including experience keeping accurate and detailed laboratory notes. Driver's license is required.

Physical requirements: The majority of the work in this position is performed in a lab setting. Some tasks require standing at a fume hood for 8 hours a day, 2-3 times per week. Must be able to use a microscope for a few hours at a time. Position requires the ability to pick up, carry and/or backpack a maximum of 50 lbs alone. Stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, and grasping are all required activities. The worker will be exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, and chemical and physical hazards.

Preferred qualifications:
Two years of experience in relevant academics; work experience may be substituted. Familiarity of lacustrine environments. Experiences with basic data entry. Demonstrated ability in written and spoken language. Proven ability to follow through and accomplish tasks in a timely manner. Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and schedules. Proven ability to read and carry out simple written instructions. Demonstrated ability to count and make simple arithmetic additions and subtractions.

About the Department

The Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences is a vibrant interdisciplinary department whose faculty's research ranges from paleoclimate to deep earth dynamics. The Department is in the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences (www.cse.umn.edu/esci) which also includes the Institute for Rock Magnetism, the Continental Scientific Drilling Coordination Facility, the Minnesota Geological Survey, and the Polar Geospatial Center. The majority of the School resides in John T. Tate Hall on the Minneapolis campus, with some labs on the St. Paul campus. Other affiliated research units at the University include the Saint Anthony Falls Laboratory, the Institute on the Environment, and the BioTechnology Institute.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $21.63 - $22.83, depending on education/qualifications/experience.
