Job Summary
-
The Department of Building and Development is seeking a building inspections field supervisor to supervise the daily activities of the building field inspectors who are responsible for conducting field inspections of commercial and residential structures for compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC) and local ordinances.
The duties and responsibilities of this position include: * Direct management of up to 6 employees to include all building inspectors. * Supervising the assignment and successful completion of all assigned field inspections of commercial/residential structures for compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code. Maintaining a record of each inspection result in the County data base system. * Maintaining strict compliance with inspection time limitations established by the Building Official to meet the intent of the USBC. * Assigning the daily inspections workload through our LandMARC system. * Conduct residential and commercial inspections as required. * Maintaining a high level of problem-solving skills. * Managing and evaluating the performance of the building inspections staff; participating in special projects, as assigned. * Attending all mandatory training as required by title 36 of the Code of Virginia and ensuring required building inspector certifications are current. * Proactively providing technical information to owners, contractors, architects, and the public in a professional, courteous, and timely manner. * Responding to all phone inquiries the same day received. * Communicating professionally with other staff members and customers. * Backing up project managers on FOIA and LeX requests. * Manage staff performance for adherence to all applicable policies and procedures of the Department and of the County. * Promote staff growth and professional development, including encouraging participation in local, state and federal organizations involved in the area of establishing and enforcing building and trade codes.
The ideal candidate will possess outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written, excellent leadership and supervisory skills, support continuous learning, provide great customer service and foster a team environment. The ideal candidate can solve problems and resolve conflicts with minimal supervision and will have a working knowledge of policies and regulations (local, state and federal) surrounding building code regulations. The ideal candidate will be organized, team oriented, dependable, flexible, efficient, self-motivated, an active listener & possess strong interpersonal skills.

Minimum Qualifications
-
High school diploma or equivalent (technical coursework in building construction preferred); six (6) years of related work experience in the building construction trade including commercial and residential experience dealing with the public which includes one (1) year of supervisory experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

Valid driver's license and good driving record (driving records may be reviewed annually for continued qualification). Pass criminal and DMV background checks.
Must become certified by the Virginia State Department of Housing and Community Development as a Residential & Commercial Building Inspector within (6) months of starting employment and maintain the required certifications in accordance with Virginia Certification Standards.
