Title: Epidemiologist Specialist - One Health

Location: Hybrid - Lansing MI / Must Work and Live in the State of Michigan

Purpose: This position functions as a professional specialist epidemiologist and subject matter expert on the intersection of animal and human health. Utilizing a One Health approach, this position will coordinate, collaborate on, and execute data projects related to zoonotic diseases, arboviruses, waterborne and foodborne illnesses, emerging pathogens, and multi-drug-resistant organisms, among others. Ultimately, the One Health Epidemiologist will lead and direct data analysis work that identifies factors that lead to the transmission, morbidity, and mortality of emerging health threats and proposes interventions to address those factors. This position will be housed in the MDHHS Emerging Infectious Diseases Division.



Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform epidemiological and statistical analyses on data and prepare results for review, particularly related to zoonotic diseases, arboviruses, emerging pathogens, and multi-drug resistant organisms.
  • Coordinate, oversee, and evaluate One Health projects, including data projects related to zoonotic diseases, arboviruses, emerging pathogens, and multi-drug resistant organisms.
  • Identify risk factors for increased transmission, morbidity, and mortality of infectious diseases and recommend and formulate interventions, procedures, policies, and guidelines to reduce infectious disease burden and severity.
  • Provides expert advice to program area epidemiologists related to data collection and analysis, data visualization, and public dashboards to drive public health action.
  • Assist MDHHS in responding to public health emergencies.
  • Maintain proficiency with Division, CDC and HIPAA confidentiality and security guidelines.
  • Maintain a positive, strong, credible, professional and interpersonal relationship with all parties relevant to MPHI/MDHHS projects and represent the best interest of MPHI/MDHHS at all times.
  • All other duties as assigned.



Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: Possession of a masters degree with a major in epidemiology or public health with a minimum of 8 semester (12 term) graduate-level hours in epidemiology and biostatistics courses. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine preferred.

Experience: Five years of professional experience as an Epidemiologist, including three years of experience equivalent to an Epidemiologist P11, two years equivalent to an Epidemiologist 12, or one year equivalent to an Epidemiologist Specialist 13.

Experience in a One Health approach to public health preparedness, surveillance and response and/or veterinary medicine preferred.

Important Skills and Characteristics:



  • Expert knowledge of the principles and methods of epidemiology.
  • Proficient in conducting epidemiological investigations.
  • Skilled in organizing and analyzing large health data sets.
  • Strong ability to prepare technical reports, records, and papers.
  • Effective communication skills for working with diverse stakeholders.
  • Capable of analyzing surveillance data to assess the need for investigations.
  • Experienced in organizing study results for publication, presentation, or dissemination.
  • Able to identify opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Skilled in planning, directing, and coordinating data projects.
  • Advanced knowledge of animal-human health and the One Health approach.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).
  • Strong skills in statistical methodologies and software (e.g., SAS, R).



Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Job may require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and equipment of <25# and involves viewing a CRT or VDT screen 50% to 75% o f the time. Standard office environment. Requires valid vehicle operator's license where needed to perform duties of the position. Frequent deadlines. In-state and out-of-state travel for related meetings.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: This position has a direct impact on the quality of services provided by MPHI to MDHHS.As part of a team, will help ensure data quality and assist stakeholders with technical assistance. This position will also support data requests, data matching, special projects and annual reports for other conditions of public health interest.
