Position Summary

The Survey Engineer is responsible for executing and managing field surveying tasks in support of civil, geotechnical, and heavy civil construction projects. This role combines technical fieldwork with data analysis, construction layout, and collaboration across project teams to ensure accuracy, quality, and safety. The ideal candidate brings strong hands-on experience with survey instrumentation and software, along with a working knowledge of construction standards, tolerances, and geotechnical conditions.

Key Responsibilities




  • Perform topographic, boundary, and construction layout surveys using total stations, GPS systems (e.g., Trimble, Leica, or Topcon), and digital levels
  • Set up and verify control points and benchmarks to support layout precision and tolerance compliance
  • Interpret construction drawings, site plans, and geotechnical reports to plan and execute accurate field surveys
  • Collect, process, and manage survey data using AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, or related software
  • Provide as-built data, volume calculations, and progress tracking for grading, excavation, and foundation work
  • Ensure surveying activities support QA/QC objectives and meet project-specific tolerances and compliance standards
  • Collaborate with project engineers, superintendents, and quality teams to support real-time field decisions
  • Maintain clear and accurate records, including daily field notes and equipment logs
  • Support permitting efforts by providing data for environmental and regulatory documentation
  • Train and mentor junior survey staff or field engineers as needed
  • Maintain and calibrate survey equipment; troubleshoot issues in coordination with vendors
  • Follow all applicable safety procedures and environmental regulations while working in diverse terrain and weather conditions



Basic Qualifications




  • Bachelor's degree in surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience
  • 2-5 years of surveying experience in construction, geotechnical, or civil engineering environments
  • Proficient in GPS and total station systems; experience with Trimble, Leica, or Topcon equipment preferred
  • Skilled in survey data processing and modeling using AutoCAD Civil 3D and Trimble Business Center
  • Strong understanding of construction layout principles, tolerance requirements, and QA/QC practices
  • Ability to interpret complex civil and geotechnical plans and reports
  • Physical ability to work outdoors on rugged terrain in various weather conditions and lift/carry surveying equipment
  • Willingness to travel to field-based and remote project sites as required
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record


Preferred Qualifications




  • Surveyor-in-Training (SIT) certification or actively pursuing Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) licensure
  • Experience with drone-based surveying (UAS) or photogrammetry
  • Background in deep foundations, environmental remediation, or heavy civil infrastructure
  • Familiarity with regulatory compliance and permitting requirements for construction projects



Physical Demands & Work Environment

This office-based role requires frequent computer use and effective communication, with occasional travel to project sites as needed. Site visits may involve extended periods of standing or walking and required PPE, with potential exposure to heavy equipment, chemicals, dust, fumes, uneven terrain, and extreme weather.
