Starting rate: $44.93

Overall Purpose:

Under general supervision, performs the highest skilled automotive mechanic's work in connection with the inspecting, repairing, overhauling, and adjusting of all types of Company automotive/diesel equipment and associated equipment and machinery and is responsible for directing other assigned personnel in the operation of a garage or garage area.

Job Responsibilities:



  • Performs inspections of various kinds, including those required by governmental agencies to determine the need for and the extent of any maintenance work. Uses gauges, instruments, and other test equipment required to make such inspections.
  • Performs the highest skilled work required for servicing the various chassis components of automotive vehicles and fork trucks, including the testing, adjusting, repairing and overhauling as necessary, of the mechanical, electrical, pneumatic or hydraulic systems of such vehicles.
  • Performs the highest skilled work required for servicing all associated automotive equipment, including the testing, adjusting, repairing, and overhauling, as necessary, of the mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems of such vehicle.
  • Performs minor bodywork and occasional welding.
  • Performs road service work.
  • Receives work requirements from Department supervision and/or Unit personnel who utilize the equipment.
  • Plans, schedules, and assigns required work with guidance from supervision.
  • Checks quality and quantity of work to assure that work is being performed in a satisfactory manner and that the manpower is being effectively utilized.
  • Monitors manpower activities and instructs and directs the work of lesser grade employees to assure that the tools and equipment are being utilized in a safe and proper manner.
  • Prepares, approves, and distributes required shop records and reports such as time cards, parts requisitions, job cards, diagnostic reports, and State inspection data.
  • Records and reports incidents or conditions which conflict with or fail to fulfill general policies, instructions or required procedures.
  • Performs other work related to the above as required or directed.



Education / Experience Requirements



  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must be able to pass the company administered standardized test. (CAST)
  • Four years' experience in automotive vehicle maintenance work. One year or more of which shall have been as an Automotive Service Mechanic.
  • Must have for all vehicles, Pennsylvania State Inspection and Emissions Certification.
  • Must have a current State driver's license valid for all classes of automotive equipment operated by the Company and a Company license to operate such equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Company safety rules.
  • Demonstrated thorough knowledge and understanding of the types of equipment used in the Company's automotive fleet. Must be able to operate and use tools, gauges, machines, instruments, and other devices required in maintaining such fleet equipment.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the job, which will include climbing on and bucket operations of certain equipment to perform such duties.
  • Demonstrated ability to instruct, plan, and direct the work of others.
