POSITION PURPOSE:
Lead Mechanics act as subject matter experts and perform service, repair, and maintenance of heavy equipment used for the Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project, at the Moab site, including, but not limited to, heavy duty trucks and trailers, bulldozers, excavators, forklifts, water trucks, dump trucks, backhoes, trailers and small engines. Lead Mechanics, under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, coordinate and direct equipment repairs and maintenance activities at each site. The work is performed through the application of a body of knowledge and specific certifications that denote expertise in heavy equipment maintenance and repair. This position includes oversight of mechanics/oilers performing more routine and simple tasks. Lead Mechanics are responsible for more complex assignments and repairs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Diagnosing, servicing, troubleshooting, and repairing on various systems that are found on pieces of heavy equipment such as mechanical and computer electronic controls, air brake systems, transmissions, generators, and pneumatic systems.
- Performing equipment service maintenance requirements, including oil and hydraulic changes, according to manufacturers' recommendations.
- Maintaining inventory of parts and support supplies to perform routine equipment maintenance.
- Maintaining service records and preparing cost materials estimates.
- Overhauling engines, replacing engines, and rebuilding components.
- Keeping tools, equipment, and work area clean, organized, and in good working condition.
- Road testing equipment.
- Other related duties as assigned by management.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 5 plus years of heavy equipment service, repair, and maintenance.
Skills and Abilities:
- Familiar with computer diagnostic programs and databases.
- Ability to read and comply with project direction contained in project-specific plans and procedures.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic malfunctions.
- Ability to read manuals and schematics.
- Ability to communicate professionally with other mechanics about repair work needed.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
- Ability to clearly communicate professionally, both orally and in written form, and to maintain records related to the job.
- Motivated and willing to work as part of a team and perform multiple job functions.
- Possess the ability to execute tasks after receiving written or oral instructions.
- Ability to lift heavy objects, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including overtime, weekends, and night shifts, pending demand.
- Knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the repair of heavy equipment.
- Skilled in the use of diagnostic testing and tuning equipment, welding equipment, use of hand tools for repairs, and servicing of heavy equipment.
Special Requirements:
- Must pass pre-employment background check.
- Must pass pre-employment drug testing.
- Must have a valid driver license.
- Ability to pass U.S. Government employment background check and acquire U.S. Government Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credential card.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to qualify as a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Radiation Worker II and complete Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) worker qualification and pass a HAZWOPER/Respirator user medical exam.
- Experience in commercial or industrial maintenance environments.
- Diesel Mechanic certification
- Applicable technical or vocational training
- Welding experience
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to work in different types of personal protective equipment (Tyvek, etc.) while performing various tasks/activities (e.g., climbing, walking, stopping, etc.) in different work environments (e.g., cold, heat, etc.). Physically able to perform job tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs alone.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
This position will work primarily outdoors with exposure to all weather conditions and temperature extremes.
